CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Casinos are good for the economy and provides good jobs and boosts local communities, says the American Gaming Association. Casinos do not revive local economies. They act as parasites upon them. Communities located within 10 miles of a casino exhibit double the rate of problem gambling. Casinos are also labor-intensive businesses that employ hundreds of thousands of people, who support their families, pay taxes, and buy goods and services — factors that contribute to the economic health of their communities. The economic effects of casinos on local and state governments are also significant. We’ve examined three claims by anti-gambling critics: that casinos hurt its patrons, that the economy in the area is hurt, and that crime increases. There is also published evidence that casinos have a positive impact on state-level economic growth, though that evidence has not been consistent over time.
