Today is Bell Let’s Talk Day. Today is a day where Mental Health is in full action and everyone talks about it. You can help Bell Lets Talk Day gain money for Mental Health by; tweeeting #BellLetsTalk , Snapping friends with the Bell Lets Talk Day filter, sharing / liking / commenting their post on Facebook...and many other ways, as well as the obvious - simply donating.
Mental Health is HUGE especially with everything going on in the world.
Please know you are loved, cared for, and that your someones reason to smile, and wake up. You are a blessing to this world, put here for a reason. You are so strong, capable of anything you put your mind to. I know I am just some stranger on the Internet that does these “Daily Posts” but I am here for anyone in need of just talking about their problems, venting away, or just someone to talk to.
Bell Let’s Talk Day is one of my favourite / least favourite days because I personally love talking about Mental Health.... but I personally believe that it should be a week, or a month.. or just seriously for more people to talk about it on a daily basis.
Let’s end this stigma around Mental Health.
You can make a huge difference to someone’s life. Simply just be nice to one another, smile, and just say “I appreciate you” or some nice positive thing like that.
You recieve what you give away... karma goes a long, long ways.
I hope your 2021 and years to come are full of love, happiness, kindness, laughs, blessings, and success.
You deserve what you give to people. So if you give hate —- I’m sorry, but you’ll recieve that..
Love you all, I’m very appreciated of everyone who likes these posts, and strives me to keep posting. Its so much fun!!
My PM / Chat is open to anyone !! Don’t be afraid . We’re all in this together!!!

Story Time!!!

“Happiness” - By Anonymous Person
Then I stopped to think, if helping a little kitten could make me smile, maybe doing something for people could make me happy.
So the next day I baked some biscuits and took them to a neighbour who was sick in bed.
Every day I try and do something nice for someone. It made me so happy to see them happy.
Today, I don’t know of anybody who sleeps and eats better than I do. I’ve found happiness by giving it to others.
When she heard that, the rich lady cried. She had everything money could buy, but she had lost the things money cannot buy.
The beauty of life does not depend on how happy you are; but on how happy others can be because of you.
Happiness is not a destination, its a journey. Happiness is not tomorrow, it is now. Happiness is not dependancy, it is a decision. Happiness is what you are, not what you have!
P.S. - Hope you have a happy fun filled day

Important Notice

With yesterday being “Blue Monday” - the saddest day of the year, always remember that you were put on this Earth for a reason. Stay.
You may see yourself with tons of imperfections, flaws, and want to change yourself.... but don’t!
You were born the way you are, with the characteristics, and looks you have, for a reason.
Don’t try and change for nobody; even if that’s for a significant other, or a friend.... why?
Because that’s stripping you of who you truly are. If they are NOT happy with your lifestyle, or bring tons of negative energy into your bright and positive life - or you’re just trying to make it positive - they do not deserve you...
Sometimes the people we want the most, is the people we’re better without....
Remember to let people know that they are loved, and that you’re proud of them — because simply saying those words to someone can go a long ways for them!
Everyone is battling their own war — so be an ally, not an enemy!

Canada's health system overwhelmed

In July, the Canadian province of Manitoba went two weeks without a single new case of COVID-19. Theaters and casinos reopened and children soon returned to school.By October, the 1.4 million people living in a province only slightly smaller geographically than Texas had Canada’s highest rate of active cases - now 512 per 100,000 people, or nearly quadruple the national rate.
“In a couple of weeks, we’re going to be in a catastrophic situation,” said Dr. Anand Kumar, a Manitoba intensive care physician. Many Americans looked longingly north of the border during the pandemic’s first wave, as Canada kept COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations under control while they skyrocketed in the United States. But Canadians’ exhaustion with pandemic restrictions is now coinciding with an outbreak that threatens to overwhelm health systems in several provinces.
Canada has recorded over 302,000 cases and more than 11,000 deaths during the pandemic. Nationally, there were 1,114 COVID-19 patients in hospital as of Nov. 3, well below a spring peak of 2,701 but double what they were a month ago.At this pace, Canada’s daily case tally may more than double by early December, health officials warned last week.
The situation is already turning dire in Manitoba, where community transmission is so rampant through care homes, hospitals and family gatherings that health officials are unable to identify the main sources. In Manitoba’s capital Winnipeg, with a population of 750,000, Kumar sees a trend similar to the outbreaks that overwhelmed New York City in the spring and currently El Paso, Texas, requiring freezer trucks to store bodies as they piled up.
Manitoba’s single-day record of 508 cases on Nov. 10 is triple the total from two weeks earlier, with intensive care units (ICU) nearly full.
“Once you go past ICU capacity, the mortality rate shoots right up like a rocket,” said Kumar, who is trained in treating infectious diseases and in critical care.
Manitoba plans to set up makeshift hospitals in arenas or convention centers to accommodate overflow patients.
“This is becoming more distressing every day,” said Manitoba’s Chief Nursing Officer Lanette Siragusa. “If we had a worst-case scenario, this would be it.”
Alberta, home of Canada’s second-highest rate of current cases, has seen hospitalizations and infections requiring intensive care surge past earlier highs, including outbreaks in 10 hospitals.

Premier Pallister/MB Health Press Conferences - 2020-03-17 10:30am CST & 11:15am CST

Edit: From https://news.gov.mb.ca/news/index.html?item=47017
COVID-19 BULLETIN #17
The Manitoba government is taking additional proactive measures to help reduce the impact of COVID-19. This includes: • suspending services at licensed child-care centres, effective end-of-day Friday, March 20; • recommending parents with children in these centres begin to make alternate arrangements as soon as possible, even though centres will remain open for the remainder of the week; • continuing to allow home-based child-care providers to operate; and • creating dedicated child-care options for front-line and essential services staff who need them.
Parents who will be providing front-line health care or are a member of a fire, police or paramedic service and will not be able to find alternative child care while services are suspended are asked to contact 204-945-0776 or 1-888-213-4754 (toll-free).
Parents are asked to keep all children and youth home if they have a fever or other respiratory illness symptoms. Schools will be notifying parents that students will be sent home if they have any of these symptoms.
The province is also advising that: • teachers will continue to be on the job, either in schools or at home, to create learning plans and continue teaching using the distance learning options available; and • all casinos will close effective midnight tonight.
Public health officials are recommending the immediate suspension of visitors in long-term care facilities across Manitoba. Exceptions for compassionate reasons or end of life will be made on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of individual facility managers.
In addition, public health officials are recommending the cancellation of gatherings of more than 50 people, consistent with the announcement made by the federal government.
Public health officials are strongly advising all Manitobans, including health-care providers, to cancel or postpone any non-essential international travel. In addition, public health officials are recommending all international travellers should self-isolate and self-monitor for symptoms for 14 days after returning to Canada.
Health officials are reminding physicians, health-care providers and support staff returning from international travel that they MUST self-identify to their organization/site’s occupational health services.
To support social distancing efforts, Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living’s registration and client services office at 300 Carlton St. will be temporarily closed to the public. Staff will continue to register people for Manitoba health coverage and Manitoba Pharmacare benefits through email, phone, fax and mail. Forms and contact information can be found at www.gov.mb.ca/health/mhsip/forms.html.
Yesterday, Manitoba’s Provincial Court, Court of Queen’s Bench and Court of Appeals all introduced new provisions to restrict or reschedule matters over the next several weeks. For more information, visit www.manitobacourts.mb.ca/news/covid-19-update-march-16-2020/.
A new self-assessment tool is now online to help Manitobans determine whether they need to call Health Links–Info Santé to possibly get a referral or to self-isolate. The tool provides interactive advice to users concerned about whether they have contracted COVID-19. It is expected the tool will help with call volumes. For more information, visit www.manitoba.ca/covid19.
Additionally, people calling Health Links–Info Santé can soon expect to hear a new interactive voice response system (IVR). The IVR will allow COVID-19 screening questions to be answered prior to users being connected to operators, which should shorten the length of calls. This technology is anticipated to be up and running as soon as this afternoon.
Any person concerned about their exposure to or risk of having COVID-19 should call Health Links–Info Santé at 204-788-8200 or toll-free at 1-888-315-9257 before arriving at a testing site. Nearly 1,700 patients have visited dedicated testing sites in Winnipeg and Thompson in the past five days including 481 yesterday.
New dedicated testing sites for COVID-19 opened today at the following locations: • Channing Auditorium in the Flin Flon Community Hall, 2 North Ave., Flin Flon; and • Guy Hall, 28 First St. West, The Pas.
Both sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.
All Manitobans should continue to practice good social distancing strategies including minimizing prolonged (more than 10 minutes), close (less than two metres) contact between other individuals in public.
------
EDIT: Pallister at 11:15am CST due to Trudeau speaking at 10:30am CST. MB Health to follow Pallister.

Weekend Reader: Two Haralabos Voulgaris Gambling Stories From The Past. (Very long).

[Note to this sub: Here are two gambling stories involving Haralabos Voulgaris. Two things you should know. 1) I originally wrote this for a completely different, anonymous audience and not for all the wonderful "Shoe Fitness Architects", "Pizza Delivery Engineers", Overnight Security Enforcers, and DMV Workers that I've gotten the pleasure of meeting on here during my time on /billsimmons. Instead, it will seem like I'm talking to a room full of strangers, and for the first time. So if you read something that you've already seen me say on this sub, you know the reason. I also sound “different” in this.
2) It's long. You've been warned, I don't want to hear shit about it being so damn long. Think of this as a throwback to the Page 2 days, when you knew a guy was going to take a huge, extended shit because he just printed out Simmons' latest article and ran into the bathroom. You know, the “glory days”.
If you read this on Friday, you can save this for your afternoon work shit. Read it on your phone though, because it's got a short YouTube clip in it that helps tell the story.
If you read it over the weekend, I suggest smoking a bowl beforehand, especially to our Canadian friends up North. Doesn't have to be Top Shelf, just something to buzz you going in.
That's it. Enjoy.
The recent news of the Dallas Mavericks hiring Haralabos Voulgaris as Director of Quantitative Research and Development recently blew my mind. I knew it was Bob's goal to be an NBA GM, and this job isn't quite on the GM level, but I still can't believe he's made it onto a real NBA organization. I still think of him mostly from his early 2000's poker and sports betting days, and I never imagined he'd be able to hold down a real job someday. I didn't think anyone from the gambling world ever could.
I was heavily into sports gambling and poker at the same time as Bob was ascending as a sports gambling force, from the late 80's until well into the 2000's. I didn't know Haralabos well, yet I heard about or saw him all the time. This pretty much describes all relationships in gambling to be honest. But I did make sure to hear all the stories about Haralabos back then, because they always made the gossip rounds and were usually funny.
I'm here to share two of Haralabos' famous gambling stories, to give you a little insight into the man. If you are an Old School gambler, you've already heard them. But they are now 15 years old, and I couldn't find a good telling already on the Internet, so new people might get a kick out of these. Sources are at the bottom of this post.
People need to understand that, back then (early 2000s), Bob was best known for two things: betting the NBA, and being a smart ass trash talker at the poker tables. Bob was a world class needler that people highly resented because he had “Fuck You” kinds of money and he sure lorded that fact over everybody. He found everyone in the gambling world incredibly stupid compared to himself, and wasn't afraid to let people know it. I guess that's not much different than his Twitter in 2018, except he's learned to be more polite about it.
It was amusing being in a poker room with Bob in it, unless you were the focus of his remarks. He did not have any boundaries and was merciless, and really went after people “Micheal Jordan style” with the ferocity of his put-downs. Asked to describe him, I'd say 98% of players back then would call him an “arrogant dickhead” (including me at that time), while 2% would say “really sharp guy who doesn't tolerate fools” (including me now). We would all agree that he could be hilarious.
With that set-up, here are two Haralabos Voulgaris gambling stories that let's you know what he was like back in the early 2000's.
Story #1
My favorite Haralabob story, which long time 2+2ers have already heard about and whose legend has grown over the years, is the infamous Freddy Deeb story. If you know it, you are already nodding your head. But hopefully it's new to you. It's a classic.
Freddy Deeb was a rich business man from Lebanon, but a lot of people thought he was Egyptian (close enough for poker players). “Fast Freddy” was a decent if unspectacular poker player who pre-dated the poker boom. So Freddy was a legit and well known regular even before TV got involved with the game, and parlayed that “real, genuine poker player” label into appearances on TV when the poker boom happened. He had strong credibility.
Freddy is probably most famously remembered for being accused of “Going South” by Johnny Chan on an episode of High Stakes Poker. Freddy handled that accusation in typical Freddy fashion – making a big deal about this small joke insulting his integrity, aggressively confronting everyone about it and challenging them to heads-up poker matches to prove his manhood. The dude could be a hothead. (“Going South”, which was more commonly called “rat-holing”, is when a player sneaks high denomination chips off the table undetected after winning a big pot, so he has no possibility of losing them back in a later big hand. It's a unethical way to play “hit and run” if you win big quickly, without the “running” part being as obvious as picking up and leaving immediately.)
The two things you needed to know about Freddy: 1) He was short. I mean really short, like 5'1” or less. Not to play Freud too much, but you can probably guess that the reason he spent all his time in poker rooms was because of this physical limitation. Poker attracted the social rejects like no other activity in the 1990's, and welcomed the physically and mentally defective in droves. It was a haven almost exclusively for nerds and losers, before TV made it cool for everyone to play No Limit Texas Hold'em, The Cadillac of Gambling Games (so hip!).
2) Stemming from #1, Freddy could have a short temper. If you are jumping straight into a “Napoleon Complex” accusation for Freddy, well, in this case you're the heavy favorite. Freddy was a quiet, nice guy for 90% of the time he played. But Freddy was quick to act like a gangster you didn't want to fuck with if you ever gave him the chance, with that persistent shoulder chip that will never go away. Everyone let him play gangster without comment as long as he still had a bankroll to gamble with.
Here is a YouTube video that illustrates both points perfectly. Watch the whole thing to the end for maximum comedy – it's fucking hilarious:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqwQiIy1b48
Here's Freddy acting like a super tough guy, and – in the moment - you can believe it too. Until the camera pulls back and shows the other players at the table, and then you get a height perspective of the whole scene. It's unreal funny at that point. Gus Hansen sitting next to him looks like Yao Ming by comparison.
So when this first HBob story happens, poker is just about to really take off. My guess is that it was around 2003-4, so the hype around poker was growing fast but still not close to the peak yet. The first Season of the World Poker Tour (WPT) had already aired, and it was a cultural phenomenon. Poker players were speculating already that WPT tournament champions were going to be as famous as top professional athletes, and with the same kind of ultra-lucrative sponsorship opportunities and endorsement deals. A very common topic at the table was how much getting to the final table at a televised WPT event was worth in fame, above and beyond any of the listed prize money. Perhaps a few million? It was a crazy time, and being on TV was all anyone cared about back then. Seems a bit silly now.
Freddy had been on TV a few times with some respectable runs in some bigger tournaments. The WPT and ESPN featured him in a few “flavor of the game” clips during their early poker broadcasts, and that seemed like a pretty big deal, especially to Freddy. TV Poker was grooming narratives and trying to create presentable, relatable stars in the poker world and weren't above adding in some artificial flavor to an otherwise unremarkable cast of characters.
Being a legit long time poker player was enough for Freddy to get some screen time – the TV producers could take it from there. I think the narrative was along the lines of how anyone – all ages, ethnicity, shapes and sizes could find a home in the poker world, and Freddy exemplified all that. It all went directly to Freddy's head, and he was not alone during this time.
Anyway, the story goes like this. Haralabos is playing in a very juicy high stakes poker game in a California casino, most likely the Commerce. The game was already full with 9 players, which is the max in most California rooms.
Haralabos himself was very new to poker at this time. He dabbled previously, but only started playing for big stakes in the past year or two because of the huge influx of new poker players, who watched the WPT on television and flooded into casinos, chasing riches. Thus there was easy money to be made. Before then, of course, he was focused on his NBA gambling. He was very near the height of his powers as an NBA sports bettor, and known pretty damn well in the sports betting world, if not the general public yet. Far more people in poker knew about Bob than he knew about them, though. He was just starting to get serious about playing poker. Bob knew about some of the bigger poker names he gambled with betting sports together in the past, but knew almost none of the newly (and artificially) created TV “poker stars” that ESPN / WPT had chosen to promote.
So Freddy walks into the Commerce one day and sees the high stakes poker table, and eyes the line up. Freddy knows this “Main Game” is incredibly juicy, and wants in – immediately. He calls the floorman over and insists they create an extra space at the table for him and for the game to be played 10-handed. 10-handed was actually the common number of players in Las Vegas poker tables at the time, and Freddy was usually based there. Freddy is sort of 'big timing' the floorman, reminding him how much he's played there over the years, how much rake he's given that casino, and how all these new poker players want to play with someone like himself, a big-shot, old school, now famous poker player.
There is nothing that poker players like more than poker room drama (except maybe comped food), so this commotion has drawn the attention of every table within earshot. Everyone near by was focusing on the Main Game with Haralabos in it. Drawn from many accounts, here is a recreation of what happened:
Freddy (accented, slightly broken English)(to Floorman): Johnny, there's no board. Just put me in big blind right now and we can play with ten.
Floorman Johnny: Table's not big enough for ten, Freddy. This isn't Vegas. Our players will object. Everyone wants their space.
Freddy: Just ask then. If there are objections then Freddy will wait. But no one will object! C'mon Johnny, how much action I give to you? Freddy is “action player”. Everyone wants to play with Freddy. They see me, they know “That's Freddy” and they want to play.
[Yes, Freddy was talking about himself in the Third Person. What can I say?]
Floorman Johnny (reluctantly, to Main Game): Guys, Freddy wants to sit and play 10-handed. There is no board an he doesn't want to wait around for nothing. Any objections?
Haralabos (immediately): I object. Who the fuck is this guy? [To Freddy] Buddy, you're not special. What makes you think you control this game? If more people come, then you can start a “Must-Move” game and play in that. Otherwise, wait your fucking turn like everyone else. Ok, buddy? [To Floorman, incredulous] What the fuck?
Freddy (heated at Haralabos): Listen, buddy. Everyone here know Freddy. Floorman. Dealer. Players. All know Freddy, love Freddy. Who the fuck are you? In Vegas, Freddy wants a game, the manager come running to help Freddy! They bring in best table to start new game for Freddy! They get best dealer on break to come deal! They bring in new chips, new cards for Freddy! They bring special chair for Freddy to sit in!
Haralabos: Oh yeah, Freddy? Is it a high chair?
A thunderclap of uproarious laughter rang out from all who were listening in, perhaps fifty people or more, all rubberneckers from other tables drawn in by the drama. There was no denying the spontaneity, no denying the reason, and certainly no denying the focus of who the laughter was directed at. Fast Freddy, all five feet zero inches of him, with the hair-trigger anger and never lacking words, was truly stunned and humiliated into silence. His eyes became squinted and his face was stuck in a wince of pain, his whole head turning as red as a stubborn, two-week old pimple that just wouldn't pop. He rocked back and forth as if recovering from a physical punch, not knowing what to do as a second, smaller wave of laughter began because it was just that funny, and now the story was being instantly re-told.
The few that were present and could actually feel sympathy quickly stifled their laughter, feeling the guilt of knowing the guy just got hit in his most sensitive area in front of a very large audience, and was truly wounded. They were hoping Freddy would finally say something, anything, to show that he wasn't completely crushed inside, that he wasn't as hurt as he seemed. Instead, Freddy walked away silently, his decades of “bluster armor” built protecting his sensitivity about his height laid on the ground, smashed.
Souls are crushed all the time in poker rooms. You think you've seen it all, and you just grow immune. But this one stood out, as almost a warning. You just don't want to get into a verbal war with Haralabob.
There is an addendum to this story.
A year or so later, and strictly by chance, Freddy and Haralabos found themselves at the same table during a big tournament. Neither man had forgotten their previous encounter (how could they?). By this time, poker was being covered in real-time by a fleet of new poker reporters and journalists, and, by all accounts, Haralabos was riding Freddy hard that day, with verbal put-downs and jokes at Freddy's expense non-stop. Freddy tried to play it cool, knowing he was no verbal match for HBob.
Until this happened. There was a Random Guy sitting directly on Freddy's left hand side who was new, didn't know anyone at the table (or their past history with each other) and who politely told Freddy this (recreation):
Random Guy (to Freddy): Hey man. You need to protect your cards better. I can see your hole cards flash sometimes when you look. I saw you had paint last hand. You need to learn to peek without flashing.
Freddy: Buddy, do you know who I am? I'm playing this game since before you were born! I win more money this year than you will have in your whole life! They ask me to write new poker book, that is kind of player I am! Buddy, I'm writing now, next time I see you I bring you a signed copy of my poker book!
Haralabos: Next time you should bring a phone book instead so you can sit on it and see your cards better.
Well, Freddy was playing it cool with HBob until then, but that last comment instantly set him off. Again, by the written accounts of the poker reporters live blogging the event, Freddy shot straight up out of his chair (though you probably couldn't tell...) and challenged HBob to a fist fight, screaming expletives at him and demanding a duel. Haralabob just sat in his chair laughing, saying he didn't want to go outside and fight Freddy because he didn't want to get arrested for child abuse.
Famous poker player Daniel Negreanu witnessed this incident live, and blogged about it at the time. I remember that he thought that Freddy would be a decent favorite in a fight between Freddy and Haralabos. But I have my doubts about that. Negreanu disliked Haralobob personally, like many poker players who ever faced him at that time, because HBob could be so vicious. So he was biased in his fight assessment, IMHO.
HBob was not a figher at all - more of a jester than a knight – but I thought he could always just stiff-arm Freddy by the forehead and then Freddy would be left with that cartoon 'swinging of the arms trying to reach him' thing while HBob could just jab him with his other arm. I would have made Haralabos the -200 favorite.
Story #2
This happened in the early 2000's, during Season 3 of the World Poker Tour, just a year or so after Story #1.
Haralabos had played in one of the WPT's big televised tournaments and made the Final Table. Not only that, but he ultimately came in Second Place, meaning he was going to get a LOT of TV time, which, again, most players thought was worth more than the actual prize money. Poker by now was white hot in America and was bringing so many people instant overnight fame. Players were resorting to obnoxious table antics and hyper displays of “personality” just to get a few seconds of screen time. Everyone was trying to create a “brand”.
Not to belabor the point, but before television made poker cool and respectable, it was filled with 95% scumbags and degenerates with almost no white-collar, working professionals. But TV poker didn't want to portray that sordid image. In the very early days, the WPT actually had a “dress code” for appearing on the televised Final Table, where a sports jacket and collared shirts were required and would be provided for you if you didn't own them yourself (in other words, for everyone).
Even the long time “Old School” gamblers were cleaned up and presented as daring adventurers instead of leather-assed angle-shooters they (we) really were. Known broke degenerates like T.J. Cloutier was turned into worshiped, heroic figures instantly, romanticized by television producers as sharp equity traders who practiced at the table instead of on Wall Street. The reality was that guys like Cloutier were hanging around poker rooms mostly to shamelessly beg recent winners for a buy-in, or even just a meal.
Under this ethos of “cleaning up poker players' images”, players were allowed to manufacture any kind of image they wanted if they were going to be on the WPT TV show. Producers for the WPT would ask each finalist for a biography, but did absolutely no fact or background checking at all intentionally, mostly out of fear of what they might find if they actually did do so. So with all that in mind, here is the official bio for Haralabos that appeared on the WPT website before his televised event, almost certainly written by HBob himself:
"Haralabos Voulgaris is a 29-year-old professional sports bettor from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This poker tyro brings a lot more to his first WPT final table than meets the eye. He is a playwright, holds a degree in philosophy, and his goals reach far beyond the green felt. His plans for the next 5 years include learning to play the piano, to have one of his plays performed on Broadway, and to win a WPT title."
I'm not sure how much of this was an inside joke, how much was just the pressure to appear white-collar in order to attract advertisers (remember, poker players were all thinking about future endorsement deals at this time), and how much of this was HBob's ego run amuck.
BUT COME ON! “Playwright”? Has Haralabos ever gone to a play yet, even in 2018? But that wasn't enough; he wanted to have one of his many, many written plays performed on Broadway very soon, because that's how dedicated he was to this art form! Just remember, this is the guy who widely known throughout the poker world for using his mastery of language to mercilessly torture midgets and other unfortunates at the poker table. Not exactly Tennessee Williams. Add in the piano lessons and the PhD in philosophy (philosophy!), and the fact that the WPT didn't bat an eye in putting this up as his bio, and the unintentional comedy is off the charts.
Haralabos claimed to friends at the time that it was mostly a joke, but as we will now see, he seemed to really care about this false image.
As you probably well know, there is a gap between when the WPT Final Table was played, and when the show based off of it is actually aired. By the time Haralabos' episode was about to air, he was staying as a guest in the house of a former poker pro named Paul Phillips, who only the most dedicated and old players will remember. (Paul Phillips won 2 WPT titles in the very early seasons, took the prize money, and pretty much disappeared from poker, going on to live a “normal” life. One of the few gambling success stories, IMHO).
Well, Paul was a practical joker himself, and he had found a way to hack his DVR and change the description of recorded programs, including Bob's WPT episode. Knowing that Haralabos was coming back soon to watch it, Paul changed the description on the DVR to fuck with him. The original show description was something like this:
“Six new players vie for the title of Champion of the LA Poker Classic Tournament. Players include movie star John Smith, astronaut Mark Hunt, playwright Haralabos Volgaris, undercover international spy Chris Jenkins, the crown prince of Wakanda Jerome Jones, and the inventor of the Internet Joe “Man Tits” Mande.“
Obviously the other names and titles were made up by me, but you get the picture. Anyway, Paul made one small adjustment, knowing Haralabos would see it:
“Six new players vie for the title of Champion of the LA Poker Classic Tournament. Players include movie star John Smith, astronaut Mark Hunt, uptight playwright Haralabos Volgaris, undercover international spy Chris Jenkins, the crown prince of Wakanda Jerome Jones, and the inventor of the Internet Joe “Man Tits” Mande.“
Paul then waited for Haralabos to return so they could watch the episode together, leaving up the modified description of “uptight playwright” on the TV and making sure HBob was in the room alone for a few minutes before starting the show, so he had no choice but to stare at the phony description.
Bob noticed it immediately. According to Paul, HBob started to get really worried, thinking that the show was going to portray him in a terrible light and edit him to look dumb and foolish, just because of that one word “uptight” in the description. Before even starting the show, HBob was already making excuses, telling Paul that he forgot they kept his microphone on at all times, and he said some critical things about the WPT's production crew, and now they were getting their revenge by calling him uptight. He kept bringing up ways he might have acted uptight during the Final Table and was pre-rationalizing them for Paul, who was enjoying it all.
This went on for the first 15 minutes or so of the show, with Haralabos worrying and moaning non-stop about being called “uptight” and wondering how they were going to edit him to look that way, until Paul finally let him off the hook. According to Paul, Haralabos didn't believe it was a practical joke and kept worrying and griping longer, until he saw for himself that it was just a standard WPT show with no unfair editing involved.
I'm not going to put too much on Haralabos for being so worried about his portrayal. Players really did believe that a good edit was the difference between a lucrative endorsement deal with Budweiser or Nike and getting nothing. The sky seemed to be the limit. BUT... the notion that Bob was just playing an inside joke and didn't really care about being known as a “playwright, piano player, and philosopher” didn't quite match up with his defensive and concerned attitude that day.
Sources:
Source for Story #1: This is a very famous poker story that was talked about amoung players live and on 2+2 (the dominant, high-traffic poker forum back then and perhaps now) a lot when it happened. You can find snippets and references on twoplustwo.com. I'm sure other long time and knowledgeable players will verify hearing a version of this story before.
An account of it was given by Haralabos himself on the podcast “Big Poker Sundays” which he used to co-host with Scott Huff, but has long since disappeared. It was a part of Poker Road Radio, which was run by Barry Greenstein's asshole son before closing. As this story is now close to 15 years old and poker media is on life support, many previous accounts from blogs and recording are now gone, and thus a lot of it had to be reconstructed from memory. Part of the reason I'm re-telling it is because it was gradually being lost in time, and that is a motive to re-tell it now, for a new generation.
Source for Story #2: I got the exact WPT description of Bob's bio from the 2+2 Archive (http://archives1.twoplustwo.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=5504109&page=0&fpart=all&vc=1). The story of the altered DVR description and Paul Phillips came from the memory of Paul's old blog on LiveJournal (“extempore”), which has long been deleted, and from my own correspondence with Paul Phillips at the time (we were pretty good “online friends” before the invention of Social Media. Anyone remember r.g.p. on Usenet?). Again, unfortunately memory had to play a large role.
I by no means want to pretend Haralabos and I were close. I knew about him and tracked him more than most poker players due to my sports betting background, but Bob was just one of a hundred different and strange characters in the gambling world that you'd recognize daily, none of whom you'd want to spend a lot of time with. We had some mutual friends, that's about it.
Both stories were written under the Geneva Convention rules, which explicitly states that all gambling stories worldwide may contain up to 15% of exaggerations in order to make the story more entertaining or dramatic and still be called “truthful”. Like all good gambling stories should be told. But the core elements are as faithful a retelling as I could make it, including the WPT description, and the key dialogue by Bob that was quoted the most at that time. It's the dates and locations I'm least sure about.

Interview with collector and reviewer Victor Jose (VJose32)

Who is Victor Jose?

If you ever do any research on a deck that you are considering buying, you almost certainly have come across the name Victor Jose, or VJose32 as he is better known on his youtube channel.
Victor is a Canadian who has been collecting playing cards since around 2010, and as of today his personal collection numbers well over 3,000 decks! But Victor is especially known for his contribution to the playing card industry as a video reviewer. He began posting reviews of playing cards on youtube around 2011. To say that he is prolific would be somewhat of an understatement, because since then he has posted around 4000 videos - a staggering number! The vast majority of these are reviews of playing cards or related to playing card topics. It has often happened that I was doing some background research about a particular deck, and sure enough, there was Victor with one of his helpful reviews!
Like me, you are probably curious to learn more about him. How did he get started with this, how do these decks keep rolling in, and what keeps him motivated with this enormous output? Well, let's find out by hearing from the man himself! Victor was kind enough to agree to an interview with me, so I put these and other questions to him. Given his vast experience with the custom playing cards that have been produced over the last half a dozen years, he's well positioned to share some insightful perspectives about his work and about the playing card industry.

The Interview

General Background
For those who don't know anything about you, what can you tell us about yourself and your background? What you do for a day job, and/or what are some of your other interests besides playing cards?
For starters I live in Winnipeg, Canada and I currently work as a woodworker in a small furniture shop which i've been at for the last 6 months or so, before that I worked in construction for a number of years. Outside of cards I have an interest in video games and of course enjoy Youtube and Netflix. I was also previously a Toastmaster years ago. It was at this point that I discovered the Tally Ho Circle Back, one of my favorite back designs, and started discovering other decks as well.
How did you begin having an interest in playing cards?
My interest in playing cards started with my interest in magic. I've always been a fan of magic since I was a kid but never became a magician. However sometime in 2010 I started watching magic videos on Youtube and came across many card tricks and tutorials, especially by mismag822. It was at this point that I discovered the Tally Ho Circle Back, one of my favorite back designs, and started discovering other decks as well.

Reviewing
When and how did you get started with doing video reviews?
According to my channel my first deck reviews were in August 2011. I guess they started because I felt like showing the world my decks.
Your first video review of playing cards on your channel seems to be a review of the White Lions deck [link] more than 7 years ago. Was that your first ever deck review, and how did that particular deck review come about?
Yes my first review seems to be the White Lions, I don't recall exactly how or why that was.
How many video reviews of playing cards have you produced altogether now? In 2014 you posted a video entitled "200 Videos" [link] to mark 5 years of producing videos. How many have you produced now, almost 10 years after you started?
I believe it currently shows I have 3924 videos, I can't say for sure how many exactly are deck reviews but the majority of them are related to playing cards or magic in some shape or form.
How often on average would you post a new video review?
I generally post new reviews every weekday with other card related videos on the weekend.
What kind of camera do you use to film your reviews, and how do you do the actual filming?
Currently I record all my videos with my iPhone however previously I used a Canon. I film them in my room on a small table with a tripod, nothing too exciting. Also currently I record an intro via my webcam for most of my reviews.
How much work is involved in doing a video review? What kind of preparation or follow-up is required beside just filming the video itself?
Most of the work for my reviews is usually doing research. I try to get any info I can on the decks I review, whether it be the stock and finish, info on the tuck case, info on the deck theme itself, or info on who the court cards represent, and so forth. Usually I obtain information from the various Kickstarter projects or whatever site that releases the deck. Of course I spend some time on editing but I try to keep things simple. There isn't much in terms of setup or editing for that matter.
What is it that you especially enjoy most about doing video reviews? Given how prolific you are, what motivates you to keep this up?
I enjoy showing new decks to my viewers, I have many decks that you won't find on other channels and a large variety of decks.
Where do you source the decks that you review? Do you have any sponsors that help out?
I buy the majority of my decks, which isn't cheap as i'm sure you can imagine, from a variety of sites, especially playingcarddecks.com. But I buy from a variety of card shops, just depends who has what i'm looking for. I do have some good relationships with a few known Kickstarter creators that often send me some perks in exchange for promoting projects. I am also fortunate enough to have a sponsorship with Murphy's Magic which allows me to buy decks from their site at wholesale prices.
Do you keep all the decks you review? What happens with decks that you decide not to keep?
I generally keep all the decks I review. There have been some in the past that I wasn't a fan of that I did giveaways with and there are others that I have available for sale or trade or potential future giveaways.
Your review of the Bicycle Gaff Deck [link] has almost 10 times as many views as any of your other reviews. What can you tell us about this review and why it is so popular?
I'm not really sure why but for some reason gaff deck reviews are popular on my channel, perhaps because no one else reviews them or shows the cards. There a few gaff deck reviews in my top ten most watched videos. I guess there's always someone on the lookout for a gaff deck.
How much feedback do you get from viewers, and what does this involve for you to keep up with this?
Sadly I don't get a lot of comments or feedback on most of my videos but I do occasionally get some feedback regarding video quality or audio which I have improved over the years. I always respond to any comments on my videos.
What do people seem to appreciate the most about your reviews?
People appreciate the honesty in my reviews and also the variety of decks I review. Also that I open and review extremely rare decks that many would never open, and would otherwise never know what the cards look like.
You also have a play-list of more than 100 tricks and tutorials [link]. What can you tell us about your own interest in and experience with card magic?
As I mentioned earlier, I am a fan of magic and especially card magic. I've never really performed much outside of the channel and haven't done much magic related in a while but I enjoy it. I started off learning tricks from mismag822 and others on Youtube.
Collecting
When did you start collecting playing cards, and what got you started?
I started collecting in 2010 I believe and that was the result, as I mentioned previously, of watching card trick tutorials on Youtube which introduced me to decks I didn't even know existed beforehand. I was only familiar with pretty much standard Hoyle, Caravan, Bicycle, and Bee decks until that time.
What are some of the things you especially enjoy about collecting playing cards?
Well what I enjoy about collecting is always finding something new to experience and to share with my viewers.
How many decks would you estimate that you currently have in your collection? According to your Portfolio52 page [link], as of today there are over 3500.
Not including a bunch of decks I have available for sale or trade, the figure on Portfolio52 should be fairly accurate though I have more on the way all the time.
How do you organize and display your collection of playing cards?
Currently I don't display my collection or even have room to do so. I wish I had more organization but I always seem to have many decks coming in and then never organize themselves, lol. Generally I keep all my decks in boxes in my closet, I have some organized by brand, such as Bicycle, and others by company such as Theory11 or Ellusionist but i've got many other boxes that are just a random assortment waiting for some organizing.
Do you have any special categories of decks that you focus on collecting, and what are your favourite types of decks to collect?
Mainly the types of decks I collect are new decks that come out, either from Kickstarter projects or card websites. I do also collect the odd vintage deck as well as some casino decks, particularly local casino decks that I find via thrift stores. In addition I like to collect some odd decks, like mini decks or jumbo decks as well as some tarot decks.
How do you go about adding new decks to your collection?
As for adding decks to my collection, I look for new stuff via Murphys Magic or Playing Card Decks or search for stuff at local thrift stores or vintage decks on Etsy. If that's what you mean.
Do you have any thoughts on the explosion of custom playing cards that we are seeing today?
Yeah the explosion in playing cards is hurting my wallet, lol. But I think the best thing is to sort through them and choose the best ones or the ones you like.
What impact do you think crowdfunding like Kickstarter has had on playing cards and on collecting?
I think Kickstarter has opened up the card collecting to more people than ever before and has also opened the door to many new designers to get their art out. However it has also opened the door to many projects which aren't so good in design and has also opened the door to a variety of scammers. So there's both good and bad things about it.
Which deck (or decks) in your collection is your favourite, and why?
I get this question a lot and with over 3000 decks it's not easy to answer but I would probably say my favorite decks would have to be the Tally Ho Circle Back, JAQK Cellars, Artifice, Split Spades, and Federal 52 among others although i've probably forgotten a few and hope I don't offend any creators if I didn't name their decks.
What would the most valuable deck in your collection be, and what accounts for its value?
My most valuable decks would be the original first release Monarchs due to it's sheer limitation, White Centurions, Jerry's Nugget, first and second edition Smoke & Mirrors, and Red Artifice, all mainly due to their rarity and value.
What do your family and friends think of your collection, and of your interest in collecting and reviewing playing cards?
Honestly outside of my fellow collectors and viewers no one in my family is aware of my collection though my parents know I "waste" my money, lol. I've mentioned it to one or two people who either thought it was interesting or weird. The only people who've really known about my collecting where those in my former Toastmasters group who seemed to think it was pretty cool.
Do you belong to any playing card organizations, or connect with other collectors, either online or in any other way?
I'm not part of any playing card organizations but I connect to other collectors via my Facebook group, The Card Club, as well as on the United Cardists forum.
If you would start collecting all over again today, would you do anything different?
Well if I started collecting all over I would definitely avoid most decks that weren't produced by known manufacturers, such as random souvenir or advertising decks, and generally try to be more specific about what i'm collecting in general. I would probably try to set some kind of a budget, which I should probably do anyway.
What advice would you give someone just starting to collect playing cards today?
To anyone starting collecting I would say don't buy every new deck you see, also try to be specific about what you collect or else you well spend a lot of money. Collect just vintage decks or just casino decks or just cardistry decks for instance, don't try and collect everything because there are just so many decks out there.
Are there any other written or video reviewers of playing cards online that you follow or admire?
I am a fan of 2 other Youtube deck reviewers although they are both currently not reviewing anything, that being cardsrfun and sacproductions101. I also enjoy magicorthodoxy though I don't watch his videos very regularly.
What can we expect from you in the future? Do you have any goals to expand or do anything different than what you are currently doing?
I'm not sure what the future holds especially with the prices of playing cards always going up but I will try to continue doing reviews as long as I can.

Reflections

What I appreciate about Victor's reviews is that he gives you an excellent idea of what to expect when you buy a deck. He shows you the tuck case, runs through the cards, and comments on how they feel and handle. In the case of specialty decks, he'll even show you every single card in the deck, which can be tremendously helpful when you're thinking about picking up a gaff deck, or wondering what some specific cards in a deck look like. As such, he provides a very valuable service and helpful contribution to the playing card community.
So if you're ever wondering about what a deck of custom card looks like, want to check out the tuck box from all sides, or are wondering what exactly is inside the box, definitely check out his channel, to see if it's covered by one of his reviews. Thanks Victor, for your extensive contribution to the industry, and for all the work you've put into this in the past years!
Where to find Victor Jose? The best place to find Victor is over on his youtube channel (VJose32). You'll also find him over on the Facebook group that he created in 2012 for fans of playing cards, and which now boasts over 200 members. To see his collection, head over to Portfolio52.

EASHL Changes

The EASHL mode in NHL 16 has been revamped to use stock classes with no customized attributes or height/weight. You customize the look of your skater then select a build at game time. Builds have their own pros & cons and an average height/weight for that type of player. Attributes are based on an average second liner, though speed and acceleration are the same across the board.
Club customization is limited to existing logos and jerseys - no custom color schemes or jerseys at this time. You can select your home ice and team play-by-play name.
On 9/9, EA announced a badge/prestige system for EASHL where players advance from Level 1 through Level 50 based on points, milestones, and other tasks that award XP. Once players hit level 50, they advance one prestige level and go back to level 1. Badges show up on leaderboards and in the dressing rooms & side select screens.

HUT Returning User Bonus

On August 28, EA confirmed that the returning user bonus is in the form of gold packs. This year, returning users will receive up to 10 mega packs based on coin balance, number of games played, and collection size for your NHL 15 team.
Packs contain 25 untradeable gold items, 4-8 rare, with a minimum 7 players.
By comparison, NHL 15 was up to 30 packs, 12 cards (including some silver cards), 4 rare with 3-4 players per pack.

Arena Atmosphere

PNC is confirmed in, as is the Islanders' home ice (Barclays Center) in Brooklyn. United Center is not (yet) in. United Center confirmed in as of 9/9.
Due to certain rules/regulations relative to gambling-related materials in E-rated games, Arizona's Gila River Arena will not be in the game (taken from the Ask EA page above):
Gila River Arena will not be in NHL 16. Due to certain laws, rules and/or regulations in various jurisdictions, EA restricts the appearance of brands that pertain to gambling across all of its E or E-equivalent games and titles. Accordingly, due to the association with Gila River Casino, the Arizona Coyotes will be playing in a home arena called Arizona Arena not Gila River Arena in NHL 16.

[CULT LIVE] 2019 Tour Dates announced!

OK CULT fans, here we go. It looks like the 2019 tour Billy was teasing on his Insta a few months back is starting to come together. So far, it's a 20 date world tour encompassing, the USA, England, and Canada and will be a mix of concert halls, festivals and a few casinos.

It looks like it will be heavy on material from Sonic Temple, given the album turns 30 years old this year. Though I don't imagine they'll be playing the whole al bum on these shows, perhaps they'll treat us to a few gems we don't get to see often. If I had a wish list it would include Edie (non-acoustic version), New York City, Sun King, and maybe something really crazy like Soldier Blue or Soul Asylum.

There will be VIP packages available, but (at least for the ones I checked) there is NOT a "meet the band" part of the premium packages. It looks like you'll get an autographed poster, a lanyard, "exclusive tour merchandise" whatever that means), and a $25 coupon code for the online shop (which I find really weird that it's not at least a $25 voucher that can be used at the venue mercy booth).

Her are the announced dates as of this post:

May 2: Houston, Texas, USA (
May 3: New Orleans, Lousiana, USA
May 4: Jacksonville, Florida, USA
May 9: Dallas, Texas, USA
May 10: Atlanta, Georgia, USA
May 11: Rockingham, North Carolina, USA
May 17: Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
May 18: Columbus, Ohio, USA
May 25: Catton, Walton on Trent, England
May 26: Gateshead Quays, (Newcastle), England
May 28: At. John's, Newfoundland, Canada
May 30: Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada
June 1: Montréal, Quebec, Canada
June 2: Rama (Toronto), Canada
June 3: Winnipeg, Alberta, Canada
June 7: Enoch, (Cree Indian Reserve), Alberta, Canada
June 9: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
June 10: Seattle, Washington, USA
June 12: San Francisco, California, USA
June 14: Reno, Nevada, USA

[LONG] FUCK OCTOBER!

Throwaway (for reasons you'll see below), also long wall of text. Fuck you October. This has been the shittiest month of my life. Half this shit is probably petty, but having everything compounded just made it a really bad month. Also, I have a bad habit of consuming alcohol to deal with terrible situations. Let's begin.
October 2nd: My folks tell me that they're going to India to take care of my grandpa on Thursday. Long story short, he had a stroke in July, my step grandma had been nonchalant regarding his care and my parents had to go to India back then to make sure he was being properly taken care of.
October 5th: Parents go to India. Since we have a family business, I find out first hand how difficult it truly is to run the office by myself. Yea, it's a lot tougher than I imagined.
October 7th: My buddy who was supposed to join me for NLDS Game 1 bailed out last minute. Complained about ticket prices even though he had agreed on the prices when I purchased the tickets. I ended up going with my friend (free ticket) who was getting married next weekend and I was one of his groomsmen.
October 8th: Game 2 of the NLDS gets rained out, make-up game is the next day which I can't make because I had already purchased tix for the Redskins-Ravens game. Couldn't find anyone to go with either, so that sucked from the start.
October 9th: Was supposed to be at the Redskins-Ravens game. We get there and it turns out that the tickets my brother-in-law had purchased off craigslist was fake. One of my cousins had bused in from NYC to join my sister, her husband, and myself for the game. We end up going to the casino next door, I get hammered and somehow my sister sees this as a reason to go off on me for us ending up with fake tickets since I'm the guy that's usually responsible for this stuff.
October 11th: Went running in the morning and during my morning jog, my uncle drives up and takes me back to my house. He informs me that my grandpa died of a heart attack in the ICU. I spent the next couple hours in shock, got to the office, started drinking, drove home, kept drinking, cousin took me out for lunch, continued drinking, my buddy who was getting married and fellow groomsmen took me out that evening. Definitely close to 20 drinks.
October 12th: Kept drinking, went to my other office, got my tickets booked with my uncle and aunt. Dropped off all the employee checks, went home, packed, and kept drinking. Might've had about 12 drinks.
October 13th: Packed my shit, got some invoices out between drinks. Had one of my other uncles pick me up to spend time with him and another uncle who was visiting. He drove to my uncle's and aunt's house (the ones I was traveling with) and took us to the airport. Had an evening flight to Berlin, spent most of it abusing the free alcohol on the plane. (~15 drinks total). Ended up missing the groomsmen dinner, reason I'm upset about this is that I've known my buddy for ~22 years as we grew up together, and two of the other groomsmen also grew up with us in the same neighborhood and school system. So having to miss out on all his wedding stuff was really rough.
October 14th: Arrived in Berlin in the wee hours of the morning, apparently people drink during breakfast in Europe, I joined in at the airport (4 drinks) and then drank on the plane (6 drinks). Landed in Delhi that night. Missed my buddy's rehearsal dinner and my fraternity's Founder's Day reunion which ended up being at the same barestaurant. Talk about a two-for-one deal, could've made both appointments AND it was one of the groomsmen's birthday! So fuck me, I still owe him a gift.
October 15th: Missed my friend's wedding. We ended up driving 7 hours to my grandpa's house. Went over my grandpa's death. The main thing I focused on was him having low levels of sodium and high levels of potassium. Ended up staying the night at another uncle's house and the two of us went thru half a bottle of Black Label.
October 16th: Grandpa's funeral. It was done old school Indian style. I went to his house, his body arrived from the hospital. It's fucked up looking at your grandfather's body. My dad, uncles, and some people from the gurdwara (our version of church) bathed his body and dressed him up. I was going in and out of the room for this as I was having a lot of difficulty keeping my shit together. His body was brought out to the courtyard in an open bed. I kept my shit together for the prayers and ceremonies in the courtyard. We had to carry him and the bed he was lying in to the cremation site (half a mile walk). So the family and friends who came carried him all the way there. We laid out some firewood on a giant metal grate and then put the bed he was lying in on top of that. I lost my shit after that as they started to pile firewood and other stuff on him for cremation. Yup, totally lost my shit, cried like a baby, had to have my mom and aunt console me for a bit before they actually set it on fire. I managed to stay composed for the military salute and actually beginning of cremation. Afterwards, we went to the gurdwara and I stayed for half an hour of prayers. Then we went back to my grandpa's house for a little bit and talked with guests. I met some relatives that I hadn't ever met and got to know them. I met one of my uncles who had come to my sister's wedding in August but had to leave the day before the wedding because his sister had committed suicide back in Canada (crazy shit, right?) I got a ride back to my uncle's place that evening and polished off the rest of the Black Label. We opened another bottle and I drank until I passed out.
October 17th: My cousin went with my dad to collect my grandpa's ashes. We all met at my grandpa's house and drove to a gurdwara where we tossed them into a river. Did that, prayed there. Went to another gurdwara (one of the big five in our religion) prayed there, went to another one that was on the way back and prayed there. During the car ride, my dad admitted to what I thought had happened. My step grandma stopped taking care of him and he hadn't eaten in two weeks. He was so weak that when he go pneumonia, the doctors couldn't give him a strong enough dosage of medicine. He ended up on a ventilator and died of a heart attack in the ICU (and you wonder why I was drinking this entire time? Because I saw this coming after the last time my parents went to India and i was powerless to stop it) Got back to my grandpa's house around 5. Had dinner with my immediate family and first relatives at my grandpa's house. Went back to my uncle's house, probably got thru half the bottle before going to bed.
October 18th: Packed my shit, went to gurdwara that morning. Prayed for a bit before taking a 7 hour drive to Delhi to catch my flight. No booze for the ride, but I arrived like 5 hours early for my flight so I managed to knock back 7 drinks. Also bought five bottles of vodka and a couple Johnnie Walkers at the duty free. Next was a 15 hour flight to Toronto on Air Canada. Guess what they had free mini-bottles? Black label. One of the air hostesses cut me and when they did a shift change I ended up getting more from the next one. Probably had about 20 drinks between the airport bar and the plane.
October 19th: I noticed as we were coming in that my arms were numb on the bottom half, like my pinky and ring finger in both hands and the bottom of my forearms were just numb, very likely from the position of my arms on the armrests. Landed in Toronto, got held up in customs because I had purchased so much liquor, paid the duty tax and barely made my connecting flight home as they started boarding just as I got to my gate. Uncle that drove me to the airport picked me up and dropped me off at home. Passed out for a bit and then drank that evening. Walked to my cousin's house for dinner. Had the sense to get his daughters gifts from India and gave him one of my bottles from the duty free (Absolut India in case you're wondering). Went back home afterwards and drank myself to sleep.
October 20th: Woke up, managed to do some laundry between drinks. Arms still had numbness. I honestly don't even remember if I ate anything other than making eggs for breakfast these two days back. I didn't even go to the office, even though I was supposed to be running shit. I was just depressed about the whole situation. A buddy came over that night and we talked and he told me to get my shit together because I'm going to Winnipeg. I packed my shit for my flight to Canada and cleaned up the house as much as possible before ubering to the airport.
October 21st: Flew to Winnipeg, first flight left at 7am, was there at 5:30am and I hadn't slept. Got to Winnipeg, got a rental, drove out to Brandon to see Nolan Patrick (assumed #1 overall pick in the NHL draft) and the Wheat Kings play that night. Get to the hotel, check in, drop my shit off and go to Brown's (Canadian people know what Brown's is) and start getting hammered. Walk to the stadium, get there, walk around, take photos, turns out Nolan Patrick is scratched for the night, FML. Keep drinking, probably going in and out of passing out during the third period. Wheat Kings win 6-1. I walk back to the hotel and pass out.
October 22nd: Had breakfast at the hotel, drove straight from Brandon back to Winnipeg for the alumni game. Started drinking in the spectator plaza, my cousins took a taxi from the airport, so I had to meet them in the parking lot so they could drop off their shit. We drank some more in the rental. Walked to the stadium, I drank during the first period, my cousins went ham during the first two periods. During the second intermission, we got an e-mail from expedia saying the hotel had overbooked and we didn't have any rooms to stay in. (Are you fucking serious?) We started calling hotels like crazy after the game and everything in the city was booked. We get to a Tim Horton's around 6pm and my cousins abuse the free wifi trying to find anything. I end up going back in the SUV and passing out for an hour. A nice lady named Patty from the Comfort Inn in Winnipeg found us a place at another hotel in southern Winnipeg. We end up getting a room by 9pm that night, clean up a bit, grab groceries, and then head to the Palomino Club (thankfully I met a guy during Spectator Plaza that hooked us up). I sobered up enough to drive us home, but my cousins disagreed. Ended up walking to a McDonald's in the pouring rain that night for food, it was not a fun walk. We ate like crap and passed out.
October 23rd: Woke up, my cousins ripped me for pretty much being a drunk idiot the day prior and forbade me from drinking. Drove to the game, was only allowed two beers prior to the game. Went to the concert in spectator plaza (SUM 41). Enjoyed that, went to the game, Jets lost 3-0 :-(. Drove us back. We didn't really do shit that night, my cousins tried picking up chicks online and failed miserably at it. We stayed up and I drove to the airport at 4am for a 5:45am flight as well as returning the rental. Also, my arms have been fucked for the entire trip.
October 24th: Flew home, folks couldn't pick me up so I had to metro and uber it. The hockey team I am actually a Season Ticket Holder of had their party that night. It was fucking terrible. They had players swapping booths halfway thru the night, so if you were in line for one guy, at the halfway mark, it would've been someone else. On top of that, they didn't tell you where anyone was, so you had to walk around hoping to find the tables had whom you wanted and then stand in line for it. I only ended up getting signatures at one table (whereas in prior years I would get at least three). It was a fucking shit show, even when asking employees who was coming to the table in the second half, responses varied from "I don't know" to "I can't tell you". It's incredibly infuriating to stand in line and then they swap people and you have to go down two flights of stairs and run to the back of the museum to get in line for the guy you waited in line for upstairs. I was pissed, I hadn't slept much and I let the staff know that it was fucked up how they handled it. If they had simply listed where everyone was going to be and when, then it's my fault for not getting all the autographs I wanted, but if I'm running around trying to figure out who is where and when? WTF guys. Seriously, WTF.
October 27th: Got sick, had to get blood work done with my doctor.
October 28th: Still sick, ended up chipping a tooth when a can of soup fell out the cabinet. My arms are still numb (yes, since the flight back from India) and trying to grab multiple cans of soup to compare them with numb fingers is just not going to work out. Missed two Halloween parties.
October 29th: Still sick, missed another big Halloween party. Saw my doctor and I need to get my arms checked out for nerve damage with a specialist.
October 30th: No longer sick and 7 days sober, my arms are still fucked.
Some of this shit is petty, I know, also, some of you might put a positive spin on what I had the opportunity to do, but snowball effect just made for a really, really bad month. Also probably going to get a lot of comments chastising me for poor decision making, I get it, but I just wanted to get this off my chest. Fuck October.
