I also wrote about letters D-F on July 5, 2020. You can check that out here (https://www.reddit.com/conspiracy/comments/hlrba8/a_notsobrief_rundown_of_letters_df_in_jeffrey/).
I posted letters G-I on July 13, 2020. You can check that out here (https://www.reddit.com/conspiracy/comments/hqko0y/a_notsobrief_rundown_of_letters_gi_in_jeffrey/).
I posted letters J-L on July 15, 2020. You can check that out here (https://www.reddit.com/conspiracy/comments/hrq9bg/a_notsobrief_rundown_of_letters_jl_of_jeffrey/).

I have bolded some of the more interesting connections and information, but there could be much more that I overlooked. I hope something here strikes an interest in someone and maybe we can get more investigations out of this. Please, if you know anything more about any of these people than what is presented here, post below. I am working off of the unredacted black book found here: https://www.coreysdigs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Jeffrey-Epsteins-Little-Black-Book-unredacted.pdf

Nardi, Dott M Jacope: No info found.
Nastasse, Ilie & Alex: Ilie was one of the best professional tennis players in the ‘70s. He has been accused of inappropriate behavior by Maria Shriver and others, although this refers to classless comments not physical abuse. Ilie is also well-known for his sexual exploits, as it claimed that he has slept with anywhere between 800-900 women. Alexandra is Ilie’s 2nd wife. They were married for 17 years.
Negrete, Jelitza: A Countess and descendant of European nobility (http://www.almanachdegotha.org/id197.html). Her family name is Karolyi. I couldn’t find any more info.

Oxenberg intends to talk to the FBI about Epstein and Maxwell (https://www.tatler.com/article/christina-oxenberg-speaks-to-fbi-about-ghislaine-maxwell-and-jeffrey-epstein). Marc Yaggi is Executive Director of Waterkeeper Alliance, where Oxenberg was once a writer.
Paini, Nicole: Nicola is a Managing Partner at Rothschild & Co (https://app.mergerlinks.com/people/nicola-paini).

She can also be seen in a picture with Harvey Weinstein at the bottom of this article (https://www.biobiochile.cl/noticias/espectaculos-y-tv/notas-espectaculos-tv/2020/06/01/carolina-parsons-niega-tajantemente-conocer-a-epstein-tras-aparecer-en-supuesta-lista-de-contactos.shtml), which posts her claims that she never knew Epstein.

In fact, Pashcow appears 8 times(!!) on one this released flight log, including once with his wife (https://archive.org/stream/EpsteinFlightLogsLolitaExpress/Jeffrey-Epstein-Flight-Logs-in-PDF-format_djvu.txt). Epstein has 19 entries for Pashcow in his ‘black book’. Here is Pashcow at the Policeman’s Ball, which Trump frequently hosts at Mar-A-Lago (https://westpalmbeach.floridaweekly.com/articles/10th-annual-policemans-ball-mar-a-lago-club-palm-beach/). According to this article, Ghislaine Maxwell claims to have flown a Blackhawk helicopter in Colombia and fired a rocket into a terrorist camp (https://observer.com/2002/11/vikram-chatwal-turban-cowboy/). There is no time period for when this supposedly occurred, but it could have happened while Pastrana was president.

Patricof served as the national finance chairman for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign (https://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/20/us/politics/20donor.html?scp=19&sq=alan%20patricof&st=cse). Alan is also a trusted friend of Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law (https://www.politico.com/story/2017/06/29/jared-kushner-inner-circle-confidants-240116), proving once again that PARTISANSHIP IS BULLSHIT. THEY ARE ALL CONNECTED. Susan is his 2nd wife. Her brother, Craig Hatkoff, appears in Epstein’s contacts under ‘H’. Alan and Susan’s son, Jonathan, is President of Tribeca Enterprises, the company that owns and operates the Tribeca Film Festival. Their other son, Jamie, is a TV and movie producer. Federico was once accused of sexual harassment by his former assistant, but he was acquitted (https://nymag.com/intelligence2010/08/photography_studio_head_federi.html). Pignatelli also has his own modeling agency which is headed by Brunella Casella, the woman responsible for launching the career of scumbag Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and others (https://wwd.com/fashion-news/fashion-scoops/industry-model-management-new-york-office-10505934/).

Pritzker’s name appears twice on Epstein’s flight logs (https://archive.org/stream/EpsteinFlightLogsLolitaExpress/Jeffrey-Epstein-Flight-Logs-in-PDF-format_djvu.txt). Epstein has 12 phone numbers - including an emergency contact number - and two home addresses listed under Pritzker’s name. What’s even creepier is that there is a subtitle under his name that reads “Numero Uno”. Usually when Epstein adds a subtitle under someone’s name, it indicates what company they work for or a relationship of some kind (ex: X’s husband or Y’s friend). The harmful consequences of Trump’s obsession with hydroxychloroquine

I’ve noticed some misinformation - most of it unintentional - about Trump’s obsession with using hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug, to treat COVID-19. I wanted to clear things up, as much as possible.

The start

A Chinese and a French study found that hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin reduced the load of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, in patients’ blood, although their clinical symptoms didn’t change much. The studies were not randomized and did not account for factors like previous health history.
The French study has garnered the most attention, even though experts have warned that the study is small and lacks sufficient rigor to be classed as evidence of a potential treatment. A medicinal chemist writes that “most of their patients only had mild symptoms. Furthermore, 85% of the patients didn’t even have a fever – one of the major telltale symptoms of the virus, thus suggesting that these patients likely would have naturally cleared the virus without any intervention.”
Trump took to Twitter after the study was published: “HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE & AZITHROMYCIN, taken together, have a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine.”
Dr. Mehmet Oz then appeared on Fox News’ Hannity to promote the French study, conducted by Didier Raoult, and advocate for the use of hydroxychloroquine in the U.S. “This French doctor, [Didier] Raoult, a very famous infectious-disease specialist, had done some interesting work at a pilot study showing that he could get rid of the virus in six days in 100 percent of the patients he treated… I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Raoult. I was very impressed by him,” Oz told Hannity.
There have since been additional studies contradicting those promoted by Trump and the conservative media. Another study conducted in France, led by Jean-Michel Molina, found that after hydroxychloroquine-azithromycin treatment eight out of ten patients still tested positive for COVID-19. Additionally, one of these ten patients died, two were transferred to the ICU, and one had to be removed from the treatment due to serious complications.
Even the top infectious disease expert on the president’s task force, Dr. Fauci, has cast doubt on the potential of using the drug for COVID-19 treatment:
Asked about hydroxychloroquine at a briefing: “The information that you're referring to specifically is anecdotal… It was not done in a controlled clinical trial, so you really can't make any definitive statement about it.”
On Fox News: “So although there is some suggestion with the study that was just mentioned by Dr. Oz—granted that there is a suggestion that there is a benefit there—I think we’ve got to be careful that we don’t make that majestic leap to assume that this is a knockout drug.”
On Sunday, a reporter tried to ask Dr. Fauci about the drug and Trump stopped him from answering: “Do you know how many times he’s answered that question?” Trump cut in. “Maybe 15.” The reporter responded, “The question is for the doctor. … He’s your medical expert, correct?” Trump shook his finger at the reporter and said “You don’t have to ask the question,” and so Fauci didn’t answer it, and the news conference shuffled right along.
As a result of Trump’s enthusiasm, the FDA issued an emergency authorization allowing the use of hydroxychloroquine for treatment of COVID-19 on March 28. The agency still warns that the only people who should take the drug are those who cannot take part in a clinical trial.

The Trump-whisperers

Who is Trump listening to if not the experts? Why, the well known infectious disease experts Rudy Giuliani, Dr. Oz, Laura Ingraham, Larry Ellison, and Peter Navarro, of course!
Rudy Giuliani told the Washington Post that he’s spoken to Trump multiple times about hydroxychloroquine, claiming to have described the results of the French study to the president. In the past three weeks, Giuliani has tweeted about the drug 14 times. He apparently has gotten his wealth of knowledge from “a controversial Long Island family doctor with a following in the conservative media, as well as a former pharmacist who once pleaded guilty to conspiring to extort the actor Steven Seagal.”
One of the biggest promoters of hydroxychloroquine as a coronavirus treatment has been Dr. Oz. He has made eight appearances on Fox & Friends, seven on Hannity, two on Lou Dobbs, one on Morning with Maria, and one on Shannon Bream. Trump has taken notice and reportedly told aides he wanted to speak to Dr. Oz himself. It is unknown if that conversation occurred, but Oz has already spoken with top administration officials, including the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Seema Verma.
  • “He’s been dishonest and he has been dispensing misinformation to millions now for years,” physician and scientific researcher Henry I. Miller told The Daily Beast last month. “I wouldn’t trust any of his observations and don’t see how he would have responsible and valid views on coronavirus.”
Last Friday, Fox News host Laura Ingraham took two doctors who are regular guests on her show to the White House for a private meeting with Trump and FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn. The two doctors were Ramin Oskoui, a Washington-based cardiologist, and Stephen Smith, a New Jersey-based infectious disease specialist. Smith presented Trump with his ideas for COVID-19 treatment and emphasized the benefits of hydroxychloroquine. According to the Washington Post, Trump “emerged from that meeting seemingly determined to advocate for hydroxychloroquine to be more widely used.
Over a week ago, Politico reported that an influential ally played a role in buttressing Trump’s faith in the drug: Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, a top Trump campaign donor, pitched Trump on the drug and offered to build the government a database to track the use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine by doctors in the U.S. The White House has pulled multiple agencies into the effort to develop such a database, distracting from their work responding to the virus in ways that are proven to help.
“Everyone is getting ahead of their skis here,” said one senior Health and Human Services official involved in drug policy. “All this buzz is confusing the American public, it's confusing doctors. There’s a ton of people involved in front-line response in the government … who are getting pulled into meetings to discuss this when the data doesn’t support it.”
A new report from Politico today reveals that career health officials have been warned not to publicly speak out and potentially contradict Trump on hydroxychloroquine. “Health officials have been told to prioritize [hydroxychloroquine] over other projects that scientists believe have more potential to fight the outbreak.”
Perhaps Trump’s most ardent supporter inside the task force is Economic Adviser Peter Navarro, who reportedly got into a heated argument with Dr. Fauci about the drug on Saturday. At a coronavirus task force meeting, Navarro asserted that he’s seen “clear therapeutic efficacy” of hydroxychloroquine in coronavirus patients. Fauci repeated what he’s said in public, that it is only anecdotal evidence at this point, which apparently “set Peter off.”
Navarro pointed to the pile of folders on the desk, which included printouts of studies on hydroxychloroquine from around the world. Navarro said to Fauci, "That's science, not anecdote," said another of the sources.
Navarro started raising his voice, and at one point accused Fauci of objecting to Trump's travel restrictions, saying, "You were the one who early on objected to the travel restrictions with China," saying that travel restrictions don't work. (Navarro was one of the earliest to push the China travel ban.)
...Pence was trying to moderate the heated discussion. "It was pretty clear that everyone was just trying to get Peter to sit down and stop being so confrontational," said one of the sources. Eventually, Kushner turned to Navarro and said, "Peter, take yes for an answer," because most everyone agreed, by that time, it was important to surge the supply of the drug to hot zones.
Asked about the reported argument on Fox News, Navarro responded: “I think history will judge who's right on this debate, but I'd bet on President Trump's intuition on this one.”

What explains it?

So what explains Trump’s insistence that hydroxychloroquine will save the U.S. from the coronavirus? There are two main “schools of thought” here. One is that Trump’s personality faults make it attractive to support a miracle cure over the protests of experts. Other people posit that Trump will financially benefit from the sale of hydroxychloroquine.
Let’s deal with the financial aspect first, since that has been blowing up in the past 24 hours. It’s a difficult issue because there is some disagreement about the significance of the two following stories. So what I’ll do is provide just the facts, then put it in a larger context.
Cohen’s Novartis deal
In 2018, we learned that Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen signed a one-year contract with the multinational pharmaceutical company Novartis. Their subsidiary, Novartis Investments S.A.R.L., made up to $1.2 million in total payments to Cohen’s consulting firm between February 2017 and February 2018.
Stormy Daniels’ lawyer Michael Avenatti revealed the existence of the contract in the spring of 2018. Amid public scrutiny, Novartis explained that the contract with Cohen was for health-care policy consulting work that he proved “unable” to do.
Novartis said it believed Cohen “could advise the company as to how the Trump administration might approach certain U.S. health-care policy matters, including the Affordable Care Act.” But just a month after signing the deal, Novartis executives had their first meeting with Cohen, and afterward “determined that Michael Cohen and Essentials Consultants would be unable to provide the services that Novartis had anticipated.”
Trump’s stake in Sanofi
The other night, the New York Times reported that Trump has a “small personal financial interest” in the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi, which manufactures the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil). This story has garnered a great deal of attention even though there is not much information given. Here are the pertinent excerpts:
Mr. Trump himself has a small personal financial interest in Sanofi, the French drugmaker that makes Plaquenil, the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine… As of last year, Mr. Trump reported that his three family trusts each had investments in a Dodge & Cox mutual fund, whose largest holding was in Sanofi.
That’s it.
ANALYSIS
This may not be popular to say, but it doesn’t appear that the Sanofi investment, alone, explains Trump’s incessant promotion of hydroxychloroquine. First of all, Trump doesn’t directly own Sanofi stock - he holds it in three family trusts through an investment in the mutual fund Dodge & Cox’s international stock fund. Going by Trump’s 2019 financial disclosures, Trump’s family trusts have each invested between $1 to $15,000 in Dodge & Cox’s fund. Financial Times reporter Kadhim Shubber wrote this means the president’s stake in Sanofi is likely worth about $30- $450 for each family trust, or about $1,350 maximum total.
That Sanofi investment would therefore constitute between 0.000003 and 0.00005 percent of Trump’s net worth. If you were worth $100,000, it would be like worrying about the nickel in your pocket. (WaPo)
Other shares in the fund include some in AstraZeneca, Novartis, Bayer, GlaxoSmithKline, as well as online retail, electronics, and banking companies.
Furthermore, (1) hydroxychloroquine is a very cheap generic made by a bunch of different pharmaceutical companies. (2) Sanofi no longer sells or distributes Plaquenil in the United States, although it does sell it internationally. (3) The largest suppliers of the drug in the U.S. are in India. After Trump’s endorsement, global stockpiling of hydroxychloroquine caused India to ban exports of all forms of the drug. Yesterday, Trump threatened retaliation and India agreed to drop the ban.
as Ami Fadia of SVB Leerink, a health care investment company, told Barron’s, any additional hydroxychloroquine sales aren’t likely to greatly impact drug companies’ bottom lines because, even if they are able to quickly ramp up production, it is a relatively cheap drug in its generic form. Fadia said it can cost as little as 32 cents per pill.
The argument that Novartis’ contract with Michael Cohen years ago has affected Trump’s decisions today are even weaker.
NOTE: This is not to say that Trump doesn’t have a conflict of interest here. Reporting on these conflicts is incredibly important! Trump’s decision not to sell off his assets or put them into a blind trust casts any action he takes in doubt - the question will always loom: Does Trump financially benefit from this? And there have been plenty of times the answer is a resounding “yes!” We must be careful not to sound a false alarm, though.
Alternative explanation: Trump is Trump
Many argue that we don’t have to look to financial interests to explain Trump’s obsession with using hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19. Trump (1) thinks very highly of himself and his “gut feelings,” and (2) wants a magic cure to get his “great” economy back.
Bolstered by his friends and allies, Trump has supreme confidence in his ability to know the most about everything. We have seen it numerous times in the past, when Trump claimed to be an expert on everything from campaign finance, to ISIS, to renewable energy and Sen. Cory Booker.
Trump compensates for his own insecurity by working to convince himself and everyone else that the experts don’t know what they’re talking about, and he knows more than them about everything. As he said in an appearance at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Every one of these doctors said, ‘How do you know so much about this?’ Maybe I have a natural ability.” The scientists standing with him neither burst out in laughter nor began weeping uncontrollably, a tribute to their self-control. (WaPo)
Finally, Trump is also desperate. The fact of the matter is there is no miracle pill to stop the coronavirus and open up the country in as little as four weeks, as Larry Kudlow hopes.
“We had the greatest economy in the history of the world, we had the most people working in the history of our country, almost 160 million people, far more than ever before. And then one day, our professionals correctly came to us and they said, ‘sorry, sir, we have to close down our country,’” Trump lamented Monday at a White House news conference.
Trump wasted months before preparing for the virus. As much as he’d like to avoid blame, the truth is that his administration failed to effectively respond to a global pandemic that has killed over 12,000 Americans so far. From Trump’s perspective, as he said about the drug, “what do you have to lose?”
If Trump can claim that he personally defeated covid-19, then he might just win. If hydroxychloroquine somehow turns out to be an effective treatment, he can point to all the time he spent promoting it while others were skeptical and say, “I did it, America. I saved all your lives, because I’m a genius and the so-called experts are idiots.” (WaPo)

The dangers

As we’ve seen, Trump is diverting attention and resources from more promising solutions, like a vaccine, to focus on his miracle drug. But that’s not the only danger of his obsession with hydroxychloroquine:
  1. ProPublica: Trump’s push to use hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 has triggered a run on the drug. Healthy people are stocking up just in case they come down with the disease. That has left lupus patients like Valdez and those with rheumatoid arthritis suddenly confronting a lack of medication that safeguards them, and not only from the effects of those conditions.
  2. NYT: Doctors are hoarding medications touted as possible coronavirus treatments by writing prescriptions for themselves and family members, according to pharmacy boards in states across the country.
  3. Trump has said “what do you have to lose” while claiming that hydroxychloroquine is completely safe, but this is not true. About 10% of the population is susceptible to serious and potentially lethal side effects: Poison.org warns that the anti-malaria drug can cause a dangerous heart rhythm. When seriously ill COVID-19 patients are given hydroxychloroquine, they are “connected to continuous heart monitors and also get serial electrocardiograms (electrical monitoring of the heart) to look for abnormal heart rhythms before they become life-threatening.”
  4. Furthermore, Poison.org warns that “chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine have major drug interactions with other medicines that can put a person at an even greater risk of an abnormal heart rhythm.” One of these drugs is actually azithromycin, which the French study used in combination with hydroxychloroquine. Another is the diabetes drug metformin, which may kill patients if used in combination with chloroquine.
  5. People may take matters into their own hands. You may remember that two weeks ago, CNN reported: “A Phoenix-area man is dead and his wife is under critical care after the two took chloroquine phosphate in an apparent attempt to self-medicate for the novel coronavirus.” Nigeria reported that three people in their country overdosed on chloroquine after Trump’s endorsement.
  6. NEW ADDITION: In Texas, Trump surrogate and RNC committeeman Dr. Robin Armstrong is using hydroxychloroquine to treat residents of a nursing home who have tested positive for COVID-19. Aside from the fact that the drug is not proven to work, Armstrong did not notify the families of residents that their loved ones were being given an unproven and possibly dangerous drug. Armstrong is operating with the full support of Texas Gov. Abbott.
    • "I probably would not have been able to get the medication had he [Trump] not been talking about it so much," Armstrong said.

Appendix: The rightwing misinformation ring

Dr. Fauci’s refusal to support Trump’s promotion of hydroxychloroquine has put a target on his back. Some in the right wing are pushing the idea that Fauci is an agent of the “deep state” sent to derail Trump’s presidency.
Media Matters: “the president has been exactly right about those two drugs - Hydroxychloroquine - it's just amazing… And the president was right and frankly Fauci was wrong. Because he said the president is speaking as a layman. No, he's speaking as the President of the United States whose responsibility is for the lives and safety of millions of Americans. Whose actions by this president, you know, depend.”
Buzzfeed News: QAnon-supporting radio host Bill Mitchell has been the biggest promoter of the latest theory. For weeks, Mitchell has been spinning a conspiracy theory that Fauci is a “Democrat plant" and nicknamed him “Dr. #FearPorn.” Mitchell’s first tweets about Fauci date back to March 3, when Fauci first suggested the closure of schools and businesses… On the evening of March 20, Mitchell tweeted about Fauci 36 times in 30 minutes. Mitchell was enraged at Fauci going on CNN and publicly disagreeing with Trump’s suggestion that the CDC should allow the use of the anti-malaria drug chloroquine.
As a result of the conspiracy-frenzy, Fauci has reportedly faced threats to his personal safety and was forced to increase his security.
Some other examples of the right-wing’s involvement:
  • Variety: Twitter, stepping up its enforcement of misleading and harmful coronavirus-related claims, required Fox News host Laura Ingraham to delete a tweet from 10 days ago that misrepresented details of an unproven treatment for coronavirus. In the now-deleted tweet from March 20, Ingraham, host of the cable network’s “The Ingraham Angle,” wrote, “Lenox Hill [Hospital] in New York among many hospitals already using Hydroxychloroquine with very promising results. One patient was described as ‘Lazarus’ who was seriously ill from Covid-19, already released.”
  • Business Insider: Twitter removed a message by Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump's personal attorney, for spreading misinformation about the coronavirus… In the tweet on Friday, Giuliani quoted conservative youth activist Charlie Kirk, who claimed that an unproven anti-malaria drug, hydroxychloroquine "in at least three international tests was found 100% effective in treating the coronavirus."
  • Wired: Google Bans Infowars Android App Over Coronavirus Claims… [in a video in the app] Jones disputed the need for social distancing, shelter in place, and quarantine efforts meant to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus… Earlier this month, New York attorney general Letitia James sent him a cease and desist notice for saying in videos and on the Infowars website that his DNA Force Plus supplements, Superblue toothpaste, and SilverSol gargle could protect against or treat the novel Coronavirus.
  • Daily Beast: Right-wing figures eager to downplay the coronavirus pandemic’s death toll have hit on a new idea: filming quiet hospital parking lots. Over the weekend, a growing number of pro-Trump personalities decided that the way to prove that the media was overhyping the pandemic was to film places where cars and ambulances show up to drop patients off. If the entrances were quiet and the parking lots mostly empty, they claimed, that was proof that the coronavirus’ effects had been overstated. (alternative source: NBC News)

[OC] What if every world cup team had the same population? - Group G

Afternoon all, welcome back to the series that Gary Neville described as ‘How did you get this number, no I don’t know what you’re on about, piss off’. So far I’ve brought to life the teams of 24 hypothetical regions, that’s an entire Euro 2020’s worth! hmm that gives me an idea...
Before I begin separating the counties of Estonia, let’s stay focused and remind ourselves of how we got this far.
Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D, Group E, Group F,
Today’s post details the squads of the tournament’s penultimate group. Whilst this pool of players isn’t the greatest, they will be playing in front of the most participant sets of fans. Mexican waves meet Vuvuzelas in the battle for top spot while the other two’s wavin flags will look like this.
Southern Africa
South Africa, Lesotho, Eswantini, Mauritius, Reuinion, Comoros, Seychelles, Madagascar, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Angola, Tanzania
Population (millions): 255.34
The part of the world that brought us the only African world cup to date (and some other less wholesome moments in history), this southern hemispheric subcontinent has underachieved in modern memory.
The region is a mix of engrossed and apathetic when it comes to footballing subscription in the public consciousness, with four of the top seven African GDP’s per capita, their resources should theoretically be better than anyones. Just four World Cup qualifications (one of those by default) makes this the second least punctual region of the continent.
Lusophone’s Angola are the exception to an otherwise South African sweep of appearances. The ‘Giant sable antelopes’ (I’m sure it sounds better in portuguese) shocked the CAF by toppling Nigeria by the narrowest of margins to reach the 2006 finals; the nation’s top scorer and Barbie Girl singing eurodance group Akwá was the protagonist in a 1-0 win against the Super Eagles, this retrospectively acted as a tie-breaker when David & Goliath finished with the same points in their qualifying group. Their time in Germany was short yet respectable, conceding just two goals in three games and almost holding their colonisers Portugal to a bore draw, revenge is sweet.
A rugby nation by trade, South Africa were crowned World Cup champions just last year, unfortunately for soccer fans they have flattered to deceive in the world’s most beloved game. A ‘golden generation’ in 2002 featured the coloured careers of Steven Pienaar, Benni McCarthy, Lucas Radebe and Quinton Fortune; failing to escape an easy group, a huge opportunity missed. 18 years on Bafana Bafana’s only big names are of a literal sense.
Contrary to what I would have guessed, South Africa is not the regions most populous nation; Tanzania’s 56 million inhabitants puts them level with England, and the nation seem to identify as footyholics as much as their historic oppressors, unfortunately they haven’t got their money's worth for their sporting subscription.
The tiny island of reunion has produced the likes of Dimitri Payet and Laurent Robert, but since still being a French territory, anyone worth their salt gets a plane to Paris.
Botswana fail to feature in the squad, but with top clubs called ‘Meat Commision’ and ‘Miscellaneous’, it might be safe to say the nation isn’t taking the game as seriously as others.

On paper the team shouldn’t need to rely on talismanic powers as the middling quality runs true throughout this team. Aston Villa surely have a scout in this part of the world as they are blessed with the services of key players Marvellous Nakamba and Mbwana Samatta.
Samatta became the Premier League’s first Tanzanian in January and will hopefully have a chance to add to his three appearances sooner rather than later. The imposing frontman scored 23 goals in the Belgian league in 2018-19 which makes him almost over qualified to lead the line in this XI.
Patson Daka was 13 and playing for locals Nchanga Rangers when Zambia sensationally shocked the world to lift the 2012 AFCON; the goldenboy of a generation determined to sequel the Copper Bullets’ success. The speedy Salzburg striker already has 24 caps for his country, time will tell if he is to follow Haaland and Minamino out of Austria to a European giant.
Mononymous Angolan Bastos will command the defence as best he can. Although recently struggling to make the squad, Bastos has served Lazio well with his protective prowess.
A plethora of pacey playmakers completes the assembly that will most likely finish runners up in this group. An exit in the round of 16 is on the cards as by process of elimination lots of you have already worked out Group H’s heavyweights are North & Central Europe.
West India

All the way back to the simpler time of Group A I hastily declared Uttar Pradesh as the worst region in the world, I’d like to publicly apologize for that remark as it’s become clear to me that West India is the bottom of a very deep barrell.
The region that provides the setting for Slumdog Millionaire has plenty to answer for as finding 22 players in this part of the world was harder than a where's wally of Manish market.

With 8 caps for the national team, Rahul Bheke is made to look like prime Cafu alongside his defensive compatriots. The Bengaluru full back plays a leading role in a one-star Bollywood show.
Aniket Jadnav is maybe the one to keep an eye on, the wide forward failed trials at Blackburn late last year, but the fact that they even asked him makes this teenage talent the side’s crappy Mbappe.

The big wall will have to wait as this side leaves rednecks turning in their trailers. The region has fathered two point three tournaments with one on the way, but the main feature of this team always seems to leave the party early when it’s not at their house.
Mexico have been excruciatingly expelled in the second round an eye-watering SEVEN times running, the sombrero wearing soccer obsessed Senior’s are so frequently the bridesmaid it’s no exaggeration to call them football’s spinsters.
The US’s largest state, Texas, is the birthplace of one of America’s greatest players and worst rappers, Clint Dempsey. His impressive club career was an MLS sandwich with a London filling, the posterboy of a Fulham team that miraculously reached the Europa league final. Romantically tied with fellow yank legend Landon Donovan, Dempsey retired joint top scorer for USMNT, including four goals in three seperate world cups.
Mexican legends of the game include Hugo Sanchez, who scored over 200 goals for Real Madrid, and Barcelona treble winner Rafael Marquez who incredibly played 19 games across five World Cups, considering they never manage more than four, that’s almost as good as it gets.
Today El Tri are seemingly at the beginning of a promising Mexican generation that coincides with some notable late bloomers.

One of the more mundane concoctions, it’s plain to see that Johnathan Brooks is the only ‘American’ to dare cross the border. The centre back scored a winner against Ghana in 2014 avenging the defeat of 2010.
After struggling badly at Atleti and then Benfica, it’s an unlikely story that aged 27 Raul signed for Wolves and has since become one of the Premier Leagues most feared strikers. The nation is hoping to harness whatever time he’ll be able to stay at this level, having scored five goals in a winning Gold Cup campaign.
Eredivisie fans will be familiar with Guardado and Alvarez, the bookends of a variety of age groups in the middle of the park.
‘Chucky’ Lozano is the posterboy, the Napoli winger scored the only goal in an historic victory over 2014 champions Germany. At just 24, it shouldn’t be of too much concern that he is competing to become a regular amongst fierce Neopolitan competition.
As usual, perhaps North-America’s best bet for success. They should win this group, but with the second round curse yet to be broken, maybe another John Brooks goal is needed to make the quarters.

Liaoning is the most vibrant reserve of Chinese talent, defender Sun Jihai is often revered as the country's greatest player with 127 premier league appearances for Man City, after years of battling relegation his departure came just one month before the Abu Dhabi group took over, a cautious tale of what happens when you let cookies decide your fortune.

Ex-Celtic and Charlton midfielder Zheng Zhi has 108 national caps and counting, still wearing the arm-band at 39 years old. An industrious and efficient playstyle combined with terrific passing range lends itself to still being able to compete at such a late age, although he will require the leg work of fellow 30-somethings Wu Xi and Chi Zhonguo if moves can be made.
Born in London, Nico Yennaris or ‘Li Ke’ was the first ever naturalised Chinese player, the former Arsenal youth and Brentford stalwart is hoping to become a trailblazer to the development of Asian football.
It isn’t an absolute certainty that this team will come third, but beating Southern Africa will be key, in a group of subjectively low quality, China’s best team is maybe their only hope.
Emotional times as tomorrow brings the final group, by this point it should be obvious who’s left.
See you all in the comments to discover what I’ve got wrong today (I will comb through the whole thing with your suggestions once this is done).

Some Background on BRMG LOI w/Eos

Some Background on BRMG LOI w/Eos
BMRG (B Riley Merger Corp II) Signs LOI with Eos Energy Storage 6/24
Key Points
- great technology (IP) which is safer and more reliable vs competitors - energy storage facing CAGR of 20% for next two decades - industry (including solar) which has been BOOMING (check out all the clean energy, EV and Solar Stocks) - continued subsidies for energy storage/ carbon reduction/clean energy/infrastructure - EOS management very strong with ties to industry, big energy players and state - B Riley backing gives many resources - vast market segments include – commercial/industrial, utility renewables and other energy sectors - climate change + population growth + raising the poverty line increase demand for (clean) energy and (safer) storage - growing ($$$) popularity of ESG from investors and hedge funds alike - this is the groups 2nd SPAC (see BRPM below) - significant risks (see below)
Strong management from Eos, unmatched IP and a booming industry make BMRG/EOS a buy for long steady growth despite obvious risks IMO. This industry is f*cking hot (plus factor is growing SPAC popularity) .. just look at SPAQ today..
I would really appreciate anyone with a bear case or battery or industry knowledge to chime in the comments!

Structure: Lawyers: Winston & Strawn & Ellenoff, Grossman & Schole (both top of the line) BF Riley running their own books (could be a nice bonus IMO) 175m Trust May 2020 IPO 18mo Deadline 1 Unit = 1 + ½ Warrant
Additional Terms: 1. Crescent Term: $9.20 threshold 2. FPA: $25M units at $10.00 3. Limitation on Redemption Rights: 20% 4. Chardan is QIU 5. 50m PIPE? (need to confirm)
“The proposed transaction with BRPM II would provide Eos with approximately $225 million of additional new equity financing, including $50 million of proceeds from a fully backstopped PIPE by B. Riley Financial, assuming no public shareholders of BRPM II exercise their redemption rights at closing. The proposed transaction is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2020, subject to, among other things, the negotiation and execution of a definitive agreement providing for the transaction, the approval by BRPM II’s shareholders, satisfaction of the conditions stated in the LOI and other customary closing conditions. Accordingly, there can be no assurance that a definitive agreement will be entered into or that the proposed transaction will be consummated.”

“We believe now is the ideal time for management to unlock the full potential of a truly disruptive solution to address a clear need in the global energy storage market." Daniel Shribman (BMRG CEO)
“The global energy storage ecosystem is expected to grow with a CAGR of 20% over the next 20 years. The current market is primarily served by lithium ion batteries manufactured in China and South Korea – and with our zinc-based system offering a safer, greener, and less expensive solution, it is our strong belief that Eos is poised for significant long-term growth and material cash flow generation.” Joe Mastrangelo (Eos CEO)
“Over the course of the last 12 months, more than 20 energy storage systems in Korea have caught fire, and in April last year, a 2MW battery array in Arizona caught fire and eventually exploded. Fires linked to lithium-ion batteries also occurred in Europe and Australia.”
“According to experts with the Newton-Evans Research Co., the U.S. energy storage market will grow to more than $5 billion by 2024, which is about an eight-fold increase from 2019 levels”
EOS
Founded in 2008, Eos Energy Storage is an established provider of long-duration energy storage focused on providing a domestic solution to a global need: low-cost, safe, and environmentally friendly energy storage. BRPM (B Riley Merger Corp I):
Alta Equipment Company didn’t seem to fair too well.. thanks to covid? (s/h vote was Feb 11 2020) Looks like B Riley bought more equity in April .. good sign?
“Alta Equipment Group, Inc. owns and operates integrated equipment dealership platforms. It sells, rents, and provides parts and service support for several categories of equipment, including lift trucks and aerial work platforms, cranes, earthmoving equipment and other industrial and construction equipment through its branch network. The company was founded in 1984.”
Possible Catalysts: New Sales Orders Definitive Agreement (and then Merger) Release of (Positive) Financial Data Proprietary Advancements (R&D)
Risks/Downside: Deal could fall through (definitive agreement not guaranteed or even possible SEC investigation/lawsuits) Financial data released might be poor or priced in
Lower Risks: I couldn’t find many other institutions involved besides B Riley (maybe two others) Relatively low price action since IPO àLOI (institutions/sector analysts haven’t yet priced/awaiting progress?) “The JOBS Act, enacted in 2012, contains provisions that, among other things, relax certain reporting requirements for qualifying public companies” (keep seeing this in S1’s can someone confirm it is standard?) BRMG Shareholder value may or may not decrease with mergecombination

Retreat, Hell - Episode 8

A/N: And here it is! Rinn’s First Grand Adventure to Earth, Part 1! This is the longest one, yet, at 17,845 words. No action or combat in this episode, but a lot of character and world building, and a couple dashes of comedy.
For cellphone readers, here is a direct link to the post on my Patreonpage.
Hope you all enjoy, and as always, feedback is welcome.

EDIT: Nearly forgot the shout-out to SpaceCowboy528 and Hatsuwr for their damn-close guesswork on the location of the portal. Here is an image with the horizontal dimensions drawn.

Retreat, Hell – Episode 8

[First][Prev][Next]

Rinn watched out the window as the van bounces along the rough-made roads through the portal, looking at the human defensive line. Berms, barricades, coils of wire, expanding earthworks, entrenched weapon emplacements… all set up across an open killing field, backed by towers and elevated firing positions… Charging those fortifications would be suicide.

His thoughts were interrupted by a loud, rapid thwacking sound coming from the front of the van. Leaning around Kawalski’s chair, Rinn saw that the abrasive Marine was whipping his hand back and forth so that his finger was smacking a small, round tin. Fascinated, he watched as Kawalski opened the tin to reveal brown, shredded something while navigating the rough roads.

Swerving around a barricade, Kawalski pulled a large pinch of the stuff from the tin and stuffed it into his lower lip. Rinn’s ears flicked up. How is that not falling back out?!

“Hey, Kawalski, where did you get that?” Kimber asked.

“Traded for it at the motor pool. Wasn’t going to since we’re going to town, but I only had the one can on me when we moved out, and haven’t had a dip since we got to Tolkien the first fucking time.”

“Care to share the wealth, man?”

“Help yourselves,” he said, passing the can back. Bradford snagged it and passed it over.

“You’re a lifesaver, man,” Kimber said, taking the tin and giving it several thwacks of his own before opening it. “You want some, Shields?” He held it out in offering.

Rinn flicked his ears in curiosity.

“Probably not a good idea,” Bradford pushed the tin back. “Not until we have a better idea of what effect our drugs will have on him, at least.”

“Ehhh… Probly right,” Kimber shrugged, pulling a much smaller pinch to stuff into his lip. The can was quickly passed around.

“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!” Kawalski called out in a smooth, clear tone. “I’ll be your tour guide for your Premium, First Class tour of Planet Earth!” He paused, opening a small bottle with one hand and spitting into it. “Directly above us you’ll see the great and mysterious Portal linking Earth and Gahla! Just ahead of us is the fortified defensive line protecting Earth from the Keebler scum.” He spat into the bottle again. “Keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times, and please remain seated until the ride comes to a full and complete stop.” He raised is spitting bottle in salute to more humans wearing different uniforms as they passed through a gated opening in the earthworks.

Jostling past the rows of tents and vehicles behind the wall, Kawalski spun the wheel with one hand, whipping them around a dirt road. Rinn pressed his face to the window to keep himself from smacking into it as the van rattled over the hastily-built roads, looking up at the alien sky above them.

They passed a pile of torn-up and up-rooted trees, and with a final shudder and metallic thunk that made half the van flinch and jerked Rinn’s face off the window, they bounced onto a hard road made of smooth, uninterrupted stone.

Rolling on much a much smoother road, Kawalski accelerated. They drove past the great white structures that Rinn had seen from the air. Those are buildings! he thought as he tried to peer through the translucent walls, unable to discern what was within. Are those plants inside of them?

Kawalski waved at several more uniformed humans set up at another checkpoint at the end of the road, making a right turn onto a proper highway. “For any foreign visitors in the party, should you get separated from the group, remember: The Way Home is off Exit Forty-Three of the Aye-fifteen, old highway three-ninety-five.”

They cleared a small ridge on their left, and Rinn’s eyes went wide as they accelerated toward a great, stonework bridge that spanned the largest highway he had ever seen. It didn’t look this big from the air!

His reverie was interrupted when the van slowed abruptly, then jerked to the right, throwing Bradford into him and pinning him between her and the window.

“Jesus fucking Christ, Kawalski, where the fuck did you learn to drive?” Bradford snapped, dragging herself back across the seat.

“Helmand Province!” Kawalski replied with a smile. “Gomer! Get us some tunes going.”

“You bet!” Gomez started tapping knobs and bumps on a panel between him and Kawalski as whatever artifice drove the vehicle roared and they began accelerating at an alarming rate.

Rinn jumped as a screeching wail filled the air. He grit his teeth, ears flat against his skull, and clapped his hands to the sides of his head.

“No, not that pussy shit! Put it on one hundred point seven!”

The screech disappeared and was replaced with a chaotic mix of half-words and cut-off sounds.

“-and bird watchers are reporting-“

“-just NINE-NINETY-NI-“

“Oh ha, na-na-na-ah, O-“

“-esters are being kept back from the perim-“

The chaos ended as they swerved onto the great highway at breakneck speeds.

Another vehicle flashed past them to the sound of a man speaking so fast, it sounded like pure gibberish. The van’s artifice howled, and they jerked over, around another vehicle, and accelerated even more in pursuit.

I’m going to die here, he realized as the world streaked by.

“True variety, one hundred point seven,” said a deep, male voice, then music began. A fast, hard-edged string instrument unlike any he had heard before, accompanied by a faint tinking beat. Rinn lifted his hands from his head, his ears perking up. He could recognize the skill of the musician, if nothing else.

“Oh, fuck yeah!” Kawalski said, the giant wad in his lip in danger of popping out. “Good job, Gomer!”

“Woooo!” somebody shouted behind him.

Ahh-ahhh-aaahhh-aaahh-ahh,” began faintly in the air, increasing in volume.

“Ahh-ahhh-aaahhh-aaahh-ahh,” joined in half the van on the third round.

“Ahh-ahhh-aaahhh-aaahh-ahh.” The rest of the humans had joined in.

“Ahh-ahhh-aaahhh-aaahh-ahh. Thunder!”

Gomer spun a nob and the volume increased.

“THUNDER!”

The van shimmied and bounced. Carriages flashed by to the right. An enormous, long vehicle rumbled past to the left.

“THUNDER!”

A two-wheeled vehicle rolled up on their left with a deep, thunderous rumble he could hear even over the music.

I was caught… In the middle of a railroad tra-ack. THUNDER!” the voice sang, with the whole van joining in.

A human sat astride the contraption, holding handlebars that stretched above his head. He wore just leather pants, a vest, a leather wrap on his head, and tinted glasses over his eyes. His bare arms were dyed with a riot of anger and intimidation. Feathered wings were embroidered on the back of his vest.

I looked around… And knew there was no turning ba-ack. THUNDER!

Kawalski honked his horn three times in rapid succession and waved his hand at him, his outer fingers up, inner fingers held down by his thumb.

My mind raced… And I thought what could I do-o. THUNDER!

The man looked over at Kawalski, the great beard of fur on his chin flapping over his shoulder in the wind. He gave Kawalski a nod, and twisted one of the handlebars. The rumble of his vehicle surged twice, then he roared away.

And I knew, there was no help, no help from yo-u. THUNDER!

As the man roared away ahead of them, another two-wheeled vehicle roared by, then another, and another. There’s a whole gods-damned swarm of them!

Sound of the drums! Beating in my heart.”

He felt a tap on his arm and looked over to see Bradford grinning, holding onto a handle in the ceiling as the van bounced and swayed down the highway.

Thunder of guns. Tore me apart.

She leaned over, shouting over the music and the other Marines as the van slowed hard, jerked to the side, and roared ahead. “Welcome to Earth!”

You’ve been… THUNDERSTRUCK!”

***

“So why aren’t they just putting him on a chopper and flying him straight to the hospital?” Edison asked. Thankfully, the volume had been turned down when, after several songs, the music had been replaced by “commercials.” I’m not sure which is louder… their music, or their weapons…

“Because it’s not an emergency flight, and this is an appointment from Medical, not some high-level directive from General Langstrom.” Bradford shrugged. “Honestly, this whole thing is still such a clusterfuck, I think we just slipped through the cracks.”

“But, you’d think the brass would be all over keeping tabs on him! I mean-“ He stopped when Stephens laid a hand on his shoulder.

“Dude. Like, take your blessings when you get them. When the seas throw you a killer wave, just go with it, brah.”

Sampson snorted. “You know, Stephens, you’re one of the dumbest of us, but also one of the wisest.”

“Dig it, brah.”

Rinn looked out the window. They had turned off the great highway, and onto smaller roads that still put any Royal Highway to shame. They passed row, upon row, upon row of houses, interspersed with small groves of trees, or fields, and many enormous buildings.

“Penny for your thoughts,” Bradford said.

He tore his eyes away from the window, meeting her eyes with a questioning flick of his ears. “How many people live here?”

“Here?” Bradford waved out the window. “This is the Tri-City area. Between Vista, Carlsbad, and Oceanside…” She glanced up, thinking. “Maybe three, four hundred thousand.”

His ears slowly lifted and turned to her in shock. “That’s… almost as many people as live in Gimyai, in the New and Old Cities.”

“Man, greater San Diego County has three-and-a-half million people,” Sampson chimed in.

Rinn flicked his ears back. “How… How many humans are there?”

“Like, in the US, or the whole world?” Edison asked.

“What’s the difference?” Rinn frowned.

The Marines laughed.

“My friend,” Said Olanrewaju. “The United States of America sometimes likes to think it is the world, but I assure you, there are many other nations.”

“Yeah, but we can kick all their asses,” Kawalski said, looking at them through the center mirror.

A clever system, that, Rinn thought. And how casually they use something as expensive as a mirror…

“America is just as dependent upon the rest of the world as the world is on America,” Olanrewaju said.

“Sure,” Kawalski said, spitting into his bottle. “But we could take the rest of the world in a fight. We’ve got the-fucking-most advanced and powerful military in the world. We spend as much on our military as the entire rest of the fucking world, combined!”

“There are about three hundred thirty-five million people in the United States,” Bradford said, cutting off Kawalski and Olanrewaju. “And nearly eight billion people world-wide.”

Rinn felt his jaw slowly drop open as his ears sagged to the side. “H- How are there so many of you?”

“Modern medicine,” Edison said, leaning over the back of his seat. “It lets most kids survive to adulthood, and most adults survive to old age. That, and public sanitation.”

“This is true,” Olanrewaju chimed in, turning away from his window. “In my home country of Nigeria, our history has not been… as fortunate as in America,” he frowned. “Many of the medical wonders they consider to be common place are rare or hard to come by, and much of my country still struggles to find clean drinking water.” He gestured at his uniform. “That is why I came to America and joined the United States Navy. I want to learn to be a doctor, so I can help my people at home.”

Rinn rolled his ears back up from where they had sagged, flicking an ear back as he briefly pondered the notion that the human wonders were not widespread. Does that make them more relatable, with their own problems, or more terrible for neglecting their own people?

“Doc here’s Navy, not a Marine,” Bradford said, misinterpreting his expression. “All Corpsmen are. Marines aren’t smart enough to do our own medicine.”

“Just patch ‘em back together with superglue, ‘ey’ll be fine,” Kawalski said before spitting again.

Rinn shook his ears in amusement. I don’t know what “superglue” is, but the sentiment is obvious… He stopped and tilted his head at Bradford again as a new question popped into his head. “How long do humans live?”

“Well, that depends on a lot of things,” Bradford said, “But assuming decent healthcare and nutrition, and no accidents or major diseases, humans can reasonably expect to live for seventy or eighty years or more.”

“Oldest person on record was a hundred twenty-two when she died,” Gomez added.

Rinn flicked his ears up.

“An important question to go along with that,” Kimber said, interrupting Rinn’s thoughts, “Is how long is a year on Earth compared to a year on Gahla?”

“That is actually a damn good question,” Edison said. “I didn’t notice if the days were any longer or shorter, but we haven’t exactly been running on a regular cycle yet. How long is a day on Gahla, and how many days in a year?”

Rinn blinked. That is… An important question to ask. “A day on Gahla is twenty-four hours long.”

“Whaaat! Same as ours, brah!”

“That’s too damned convenient,” Edison shook his head.

“Why is that a problem?” Gomez asked, twisting around in his seat to join the conversation.

“Dude, there’s like, two hundred billion stars in our galaxy,” Bradford said, stretching her hands out to indicate a huge size, “Most with multiple planets, and at least a hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe. The odds that two planets around two different stars would have exactly the same day length is astronomical!” She shook her head. “Nevermind the possibility of other universes!”

Rinn stared at her, struggling to comprehend the words and concepts she had just spoken. That’s more stars than there are in the night sky! What do stars have to do with anything, and how can a planet be around a star? His ears went flat. What secrets do they know that they haven’t shown yet? What secrets do they know that they haven’t even thought to mention?!

“How long is an hour?” Miller asked, cutting off the rising argument.

“Rinn?” Bradford looked at him, expectantly.

That’s a question I can answer. “Sixty minutes.”

“Hmm… How long is a minute?”

“Sixty seconds.”

“Shit. How long is a second?”

“Uhhh…” Rinn scratched an ear. “Well, the measurement of seconds is still fairly new, and most families can barely afford a clock, if at all, nevermind a pendulum clock.”

“What about this?” Edison asked, taking a band off his wrist and holding it out for him to see. He pressed buttons in the side, eliciting high-pitched tones like the hearing test machine that set Rinn’s ears twitching.

“What is…” Rinn’s eyes went wide and his ears perked up as he took in the steadily changing symbols displayed on face. “Is this…” He reached out to gently touch the face of it. “This is a clock!”

“Yeah. We call it a wrist watch, or just a watch.” Edison put it in his hand. “Here, you can keep it.”

“But… How much did this cost?!?!” This would be worth a king’s ransom in Ganlin!

“Ehhh… I think it cost me, like, forty bucks?” Edison shrugged. “It’s not expensive. I’ll just pick up another one at the em-see-ex.”

Rinn’s ears dropped low. What miracles they have that they think nothing of… “Thank you.”

Edison shrugged. “It’s nothing, man.”

Examining the watch, Rinn tilted his head. “What is it doing? It just seems to be counting.”

“Oh, yeah, sorry, I started the stopwatch function.”

A few moments later, and Rinn had a basic understanding of how to operate his new watch. Not that I can actually read any of the numbers on it, beyond telling what are seconds, minutes, and hours… “It looks like your second is about the same. I’m not sure...” An idea came to him. “Hold on.”

He concentrated for a moment, drawing on ambient mana to spin a minor artifice. Without his stave, the simple spell required significant concentration and focus to form. Without a stave, the energy isn’t just instantly there, so you have to build the artifice one step at a time. Controlling structures first, then the mana to do the work. Don’t need to make myself look like a novice and have a simple spell blow up in my face… I’m limited to just the ambient mana I can draw in myself, so such a mistake shouldn’t be catastrophic, but the mana seems to flow here as easily as it does back home… Something important to note for later…

Holding up his left hand, a faint, crude image of a clock appeared, this one with Tolesh characters marking the time. Three arms spun around the face of the clock.

“Oh, damn, that’s a neat trick!” Edison said, leaning over the back of the seat to inspect the projection. “How precise is it?”

“As precise as we can determine,” Rinn said. “It is driven by the base harmonic frequency of all mana, which doesn’t change. I can’t hold an artifice like this for very long without my stave, though…” He glanced at Edison, holding the watch out.

“Oh, right!” Edison took the watch again and reset the stopwatch. “Mark me at ten seconds?” Rinn nodded. “Tell me when to go.”

“Ready…. Go!” Edison hit the start button with a tiny beep right as the second arm on Rinn’s projection reached the top of the clock. “Stop!” Rinn called out ten seconds later.

“Damn,” Edison said, holding up the watch for Rinn and Bradford to view. “Almost exactly ten seconds, give or take human reaction time.”

“So about the same…” Bradford frowned. “That’s too damned convenient.”

“Well, how long is your year?” Rinn asked, dismissing the artifice and giving her the attention of both ears.

“Three hundred sixty-five and one quarter days. Our calendar years is three-sixty-five days, with a leap year every four that adds a day in February.”

“Ha!” He clicked his fingers at her. “Ours are three hundred sixty-three and four-fifths! The Royal calendar is three hundred sixty-four days long, with a Lost Day every fifth year.”

“Well, damn, maybe they’re not exactly identical,” Bradford said.

“Wouldn’t it make sense for them to be close?” Sampson asked. “If the Ganlin made the portal to flee to a new world, wouldn’t they try to find one that was as close to theirs as they could?”

“Yes, yes we would!” Rinn said. “Discussions of the concept of other worlds often included the possibility that other worlds would have days much shorter or longer than ours, or a sun that set in the east and rose in the west, or no sun at all!”

“Alright, you fucking nerds, we’re almost there,” Kawalksi said as the van came to a stop. “Get your aye-dees ready.” The van accelerated again as he spun the wheel to the left, and they accelerated around another curve that connected to another highway.

Rinn looked about as the humans all began digging unusual purses out of various pockets, and pulling out little cards with ultra-realistic portraits on them. He eyed Bradford’s card. “I don’t have one of those…”

“It’s fine, the guards at the gate probably won’t even notice you, and we’ll be escorting you, anyway.” She looked out the window behind him as the van straightened its course, pointing. “You ever see anything like that before?”

Rinn turned, looking past the highway, past an unbelievably-tall building, to a wide-open, endless expanse. His ears perked up and his brow raised. “That’s… water.” I’ve never seen an ocean before… And here I am, staring at one on a different world.

“That’s the Pacific Ocean, the largest ocean on Earth. At its widest point, it stretches half-way around the world.”

He blinked, trying to imagine the scale, and they were leaving the highway, the ocean disappearing from view.

Ahead, the van slowed as they approached a large gate structure over the road, and slid into a line of cars. “Ah, shit, they’re in Charlie,” Kawalski spit into his bottle. “They might do more than just wave us through.”

Rinn peered through the window at the gate ahead of them, and saw multiple Marines in body armor standing at each lane. Other Marines flagged one vehicle off to the side, and had the humans inside step out while they began searching through it.

A few moments later, it was their turn. Kawalski turned the music down and hit a button beside him that made the window lower on its own. Rinn quirked an ear in curiosity, wondering how their artifices worked with no indication of mana usage.

The vehicle ahead of them was allowed through, and then it was their turn. The van rolled forward, and there was a squeal of metal as Kawalski brought them to a stop next to the guards. One was holding a rifle and stood back from the other, who just had a pistol. Both wore the same armor and helmets as the Marines did when in combat. Kawalski passed his portrait card to the guard.

“I’m going to need see all of them,” the Marine said, flipping the card around and presenting it to a hand-held artificing tool. The artifice beeped, and the Marine held the card against the scanner for a moment while Kawalski reached back to collect the rest of the cards.

“One of our guys doesn’t have an ID, but we’re escorting him,” he said as he handed the rest of the IDs over.

The Marine nodded, presenting another card to be beeped. He glanced in the van, and did a double-take when he saw Rinn. “Holy shit! Is that a?”

“Yup,” Kawalski said, picking up his bottle to spit in. “We’re taking him to the hospital for ex-rays and em-ar-ayes.”

The sentry flagged another Marine over. “Fucking hell… Corporal, what do you think of this?” He pointed at Rinn. “They’re taking him to Medical.”

“Holy shit!” The Corporal stared in the window, making Rinn shift uncomfortably. The Marine with the rifle stepped over to stare as well, while the first guard resumed beeping cards.

Bradford pulled a piece of paper out of a breast pocket and unfolded it, passing it forward. “This is Second Artificer Ahyat, he’s been a Ganlin specialist embedded in my squad, authorized by General Langstrom himself.”

The Corporal took the paper and glanced it over. His eyebrows shot up. “That’s more stars than I need to see,” he said, passing it back. “As long as one of you is escorting him at all times, you’re good to go.”

Kawalski raised his spit bottle in salute before setting it aside and collecting all the cards. He passed them to Gomez as the first guard waved them through.

“Never thought I’d see an alien in real life…” Rinn heard as they pulled away.

"Here, keep this," Bradford said, passing him the paper. "Forgot to give it to you earlier. It's a copy of the order attaching you to our squad." He took it with a nod.

“We stopping at the em-see-ex first?” Kawalski asked as Rinn debated about which pocket to put his chit in.

There are so many pockets!

Bradford glanced at her own watch. “Yeah, Rinn’s gonna need some clothes and other stuff, but I don’t want to go ham in stocking up on shit, we still have to get to the barracks, cleaned up, and back here by ten.”

“’S fine,” Kawalski spit into his bottle and used it to point at a building as large as a castle as they drove past. “We’ll be coming right back here. We can make our supply run while you and Shields are playing doctor.”

Bradford narrowed her eyes at Kawalski before rolling them in dismissal of whatever his comment meant. “Yeah, that works.”

They passed large fields paved with stone, where hundreds of carriages of all sorts were parked, with room for hundreds more. Just passed the paved field for what Rinn figured was the hospital, they turned into another paved field.

“Unless there’s something you need back at the barracks, we don’t all need to go in,” Bradford said. “We don’t have a whole lot of time to waste.”

“Oh, some of us are definitely coming in,” Sampson said. “We’re not gonna leave our boy here at the mercy of your sense of style.”

“What’s wrong with my sense of style?! I have a good sense of style!”

“Yeah, for a chick!” Kawalski said. “Somebody needs ta show him how to dress like a man.”

“Am I gonna have to have an intervention with you two?” Sampson asked.

“Sampson, no offense, buddy,” Edison said, turning around with an apologetic look on his face, “But the gay sense of style skipped a generation with you.”

“He is not wrong,” Olanrewaju nodded. “I have seen the way you dress.” The rest of the squad nodded in agreement.

“Man, fuck all of you guys.”

“Alright, so who’s all coming in with us?” Bradford asked with a smile.

“I am,” Kawalski said as he parked the van between two white lines painted on the ground. He moved a lever next to his steering wheel and opened his door. “Keep the engine running, Gomer.”

Kimber and Edison exchanged glances. “We’re coming.”

“I’m staying,” Miller said, leaning back in his seat and closing his eyes.

“I have nothing that I need,” Olanrewaju said, shifting in his seat to allow Kimber to slide by him.

“Somebody’s gotta reign those three in,” Dubois said, sliding past a pouting Sampson and working his way to the door as Bradford opened it.

Rinn climbed out of the van after Bradford, bending over to inspect the paving beneath their feet while the humans stretched.

“It’s called asphalt,” Dubois said, hopping out. “It’s gravel mixed with hot bitumen, and compressed with a heavy rolling machine.”

Rinn picked at the fine gravel with a nail. “Bitumen?”

“Thick tar, springs from the ground.”

“I know what bitumen is,” Rinn said, flicking his ears in annoyance. “I was studying Basic Artificing at the University at Yagyhanae when the third drop fell.”

“You have one of those experiments, too?” Bradford asked. “Our most famous one had its ninth drop a few years ago!”

“Let’s go, nerds,” Kawalski said, walking around the van. “Or are you going to stare at the pavement all day?”

Dubois rolled his eyes as the group fell in and headed for the large building. I’m going inside a human building! Rinn thought, his tail flicking in excitement as they walked.

“Do you have tar fields, or did you refine it from oil?” Dubois asked.

Rinn flicked an ear at him. “The Yagyhanae sample came from the tar fields of Jhujhi, in the northeast corner of the Kingdom.” Wait… He stopped mid-step, turning to look at Dubois. “What do you mean, ‘refine it from oil?’”

“Crude oil, man,” Dubois said. “Distill it like alcohol, and you can refine it into all sorts of things, from bitumen to high-octane jet fuel, and everything in-between.” He gestured around them. “Hell, our entire civilization runs on oil.”

Rinn flicked an ear as they continued, considering. “So, if we had oil you could use…”

“You have oil?”

“There are places where it seeps out of the ground in my home province.” He gestured at himself and his dark fur. “It’s a common joke that keshmin from Yintar are stained with it.”

“Sounds like Yintar needs some mother-fucking freedom!” Kawalski said, puffing his chest out.

Rinn opened his mouth to question his definition of “freedom” when the doors they were approaching slid open on their own. His ears and eyes swung to the doors, followed by his head.

“Keep walking,” Bradford said, giving him a nudge in the back. “They’re automatic doors. They have motors triggered by motion sensors.”

“Are you sure you don’t have magic, because…” he trailed off as they continued into the “em-cee-ex,” and stared about at the wonders laid before him. He heard Edison say something about technology indistinguishable from magic, but wasn’t paying attention. It’s a giant market… He slowly looked about. There are so many things… There are moving pictures on that wall!

“Earth to Shields!” Bradford waived a hand in front of his face, snapping him out of his reverie. “Welcome to America, bud.”

“C’mon, Shields, time to get you some proper clothes!” Edison said, waving him towards an endless array of clothing racks.

Rinn started to follow, but was halted by a sudden realization. “I… I don’t have anything to pay for any of this.”

“Nah, don’t worry about it, man, we got you!” Kimber said, throwing a heavy arm over his shoulder. “You saved all our asses back at that camp, the least we can do is get you some proper duds.”

Rinn flicked his ears back and sighed, following along with Kimber and Edison. “I don’t have a choice in this, do I?”

“Nope!” Kimber lifted his arm and gave him a hearty slap on the back, nearly sending him tumbling forward as the other men fell in around him.

“We’ll meet you at the registers, Jabs,” Kawalski said, grabbing a large basket on a wheeled frame as Edison turned and led them down an aisle.

“Have fun playing dress-up,” Bradford laughed. “Just make sure you get him some toiletries, too.”

***

One whirlwind tour of the “Marine Corps Exchange,” and brief explanation of paper currency and credit cards later, Rinn found himself walking back to the van, the proud new owner of no less than three complete changes of clothes, two packs of “boxers,” three packs of socks, a pack of toothbrushes with holder and three tubes of toothpaste of assorted flavors, a deodorant stick, a bottle of cologne, a pair of “sneakers.” which apparently aren’t for sneaking, a “dog” brush, a bottle of “regular shampoo,” a bottle of “dog shampoo,” a “loofah,” which was apparently for scrubbing, a towel, and an assortment of tools and field supplies that the Marines recommended, or that Rinn recognized as useful. They even had fine sandpaper and polishing cloth and oil in the “hardware” section. No more khansha reeds and river eel scales for this keshmin!

“So, why were there so few people?” he asked, looking up from the bags he was carrying. “That is such a large market… shop?” He shook his head. So many new concepts that needed new words. “But we were the only ones there except for the people manning the… registers…” He struggled a bit with the human word, but felt he managed to get it mostly right.

“Well, we got here right as they were opening, so it’s still pretty early,” Dubois shrugged. “And most of the base is at the portal, or on the other side of it.”

“The women at the registers didn’t seem particularly surprised to see me,” Rinn said as they approached the van.

“They saw you when you came in,” Bradford said, rolling her eyes. “I had to explain to them why you were here, and they got all of their surprise out of the system then.”

“Ah,” Rinn said as they opened the van doors and started the awkward process of climbing back in. Everyone who left insisted on having the seats they started with, much to the grumbling of those who had to move to let them in. Piling his bags into the space between the front seats and second row seats, Rinn slid into his window seat. Bradford followed him, shutting the door behind her.

“Barracks?” Kawalski asked, looking at Bradford in the mirror as he started the van.

“Barracks,” she nodded.

“Aye,” Kawalski said, yanking the lever behind the wheel down, and they were off.

“Hey, Rinn,” Gomez said, turning around to look at him. “We were talking about human and keshmin ages before. How long do keshmin live, and how old are you?”

Rinn looked up from a bag he was rummaging through. “Well, the oldest keshmin I’ve known was old Tylan, he was the healing artificer in my village when I was young. He was eighty-four when he passed away.” His ears flicking down as he scratched behind one. “The oldest keshmin I’ve heard of was Master Raeyul, one of the Professors of Artificetry at Yagyhanae. He was a hundred and two when he passed away while giving an exam to his class.” Rinn snorted, his ears flicking up in amusement. “They say that he was such a tyrant of a professor, his students sat in his class for three hours before someone went up to wake him up and found him dead.”

“Oh, damn,” Edison said, leaning forward to rest his arms on the back of Rinn and Bradford’s seat.

“You know, I think I’ve known a professor or two like that,” Bradford said, smiling at memories.

“Pff, you and your fancy edumacation,” Edison rolled his eyes. Bradford just smiled. “So, how old are you?” he asked, tapping Rinn’s shoulder.

“I have seen twenty-four summers. How old are you?”

“I’m twenty-two. Kawalski up there’s twenty-four. He’d be a Sergeant by now if he hadn’t been en-jay-peed three times.”

“Fuck you.”

“En-jay-peed?” Rinn asked.

“Acronym for Non-Judicial Punishment,” Bradford said. “Kawalski got himself into enough trouble that he got busted down in rank for it three times.”

“Only twice!” Kawalski objected. “The second time was just a suspended bust!”

Bradford shook her head with a smile.

“I’m eighteen!” Gomez said.

“Goddamn fucking baby boot is what you are,” Kawalski said. “We’ve all got boots that have more time in service than you do. Shut the fuck up.”

Gomez turned around to pout out the window.

“Kimber here’s twenty-two like I am, but he enlisted out of high school, so he’s got an extra year in service on me.”

“That’s not the only thing I’ve got on you,” Kimber winked.

“Okay, Sampson,” Edison rolled his eyes.

“Hey!” Sampson said while Kimber just grinned.

“Our token gay black man here,” Edison continued, pointing his thumb over his shoulder, “Is twenty-one. He checks multiple boxes on our diversity hire list.” Sampson showed him his middle finger.

Rinn cocked an ear at that. That is… Not something I’m going to ask about right now.

“Scuba Steve is also twenty-one.”

“Brah,” Stephens said, giving Rinn a happy nod.

“Old Moody Miller over there is twenty-three, but he got an even later start than I did. How many years of college did you do?”

“Three,” Miller said, gazing out the window as the road turned and revealed a large, paved strip on the other side of a row of large buildings. Rinn could see Vipers and Ospreys sitting in rows. A pair of Vipers lifted off as they drove past.

Fascinated, Rinn tried to watch as they flew overhead, clunking his horns against the window. He stopped trying to angle his head to see when Bradford started laughing. He gave her a sidelong glance as he flicked his ears against his skull in embarrassment and retreated into his corner of the seat.

“Sorry,” she said. “You just looked so…” She glanced away. “Sorry.”

Rinn saw everyone else in the van exchange glances, but wasn’t proficient enough in human eye speak to understand their meaning.

“Anyway, Oh-Ten back there is the old man of the group, he’s twenty-six.”

“Oh-Ten?” Rinn glanced at Olanrewaju.

“Yeah, his name starts with Oh, and has ten letters in it, it’s easier than pronouncing his name sometimes.” Edison shrugged. “Or we just call him Doc.”

Olanrewaju gave him a shrug, and Rinn rolled his ears in return.

“So I’m older than most of you,” Rinn said, glancing around. His gaze settled on Bradford. “What about you? How old are you?”

“Ho, boy!” Kawalski said. “Ain’t you ever talked to women before? Never ask a woman her age!”

“Most of my experience in talking to women have been in brothels,” he said, and instantly regretted it as Bradford smirked.

“You spend a lot of time in brothels?” she asked with a sly quirk of an eyebrow.

“I, ah, that is… uh, no…” Rinn retreated further into his corner, his ears flat against his skull.

“That doesn’t sound very convincing, Second Artificer,” Bradford gave him a devilish grin.

Rinn snapped his mouth shut and gave her a glare. Why am I bothered by this? He wondered.

Further introspection was interrupted as the van swerved and jerked hard around a curve, bouncing him out of his seat and sending him sliding into Bradford.

“Goddamn potholes!” Kawalski growled as Rinn extricated himself from Bradford’s arms.

“And that is why we wear our seatbelts,” she said with a smile, helping him back into his side of the seat. “And so you don’t go flying through the windshield when we crash,” she added, pitching voice towards Kawalski as she gave him a glare.

“You mean if,” Kawalski said as Rinn retreated back into his corner and firmly buckled himself in.

“No, I don’t.”

“Well, fuck you, next time I’ll let Gomer drive!”

“Really?” Gomez asked, perking up.

“Fuck no!”

As the two continued their squabble, Bradford gave Rinn a glance that was unmistakably calculating and mischievous. He gave her an uncertain look back, huddling into his corner, but after a moment’s consideration, she dismissed whatever she was thinking.

“So,” she said, jumping back a few topics. “How many keshmin are there?”
